IR Gyro-Flow - Compressor end oil

What is the correct oil to use in the compressor end on these units? The book just lists a Sybolt rating but nothing about the type of oil. I have been told that non-detergent SAE 30 would work fine. Can anyone confirm?

We bought IR Spiro-Flo compressors in the early '70's and they recommended what is now Mercon / Dexron ATF.. I think your Gyro- Flo is the next model older ...I'd at least recommend a hyd oil ...

I've got several Gyro-flow books so I can check tomorrow and see if any of them recommend anything different, or in particular. That said I've got a customer that used to run several of the 600 CFM models. To the best of my knowledge he always ran ATF in them and never had any problems with the air ends that I knew of.

Generally speaking, vanes require heavier oil due to the sliding friction of the blades against the inner wall of the stator in which they spin. Combined with the centrifugal force throwing them outward against the bore, and it is apparent why a heavier oil is needed in a vane than a screw. Screws can get away with light AW32 hydraulic oil or ATF (not used as much anymore as it has lost a lot of anti-foaming additives over the years), but we regularly used 40W oil like Shell Tellus 100 or 150 in Hydrovane compressors back in the 90"s. You should be able to easily cross-reference that to an oil from another manufacturer. If in doubt, you can send the oil specs to one of the oil companies and they will gladly recommend something for you. I asked Petro Canada a few questions like that and they got back to me within a couple of days. I would avoid using Nuto oil as I have found it to be a very sludgy oil for use in compressors.

I would highly recommend researching this on the manufacturers website or other source of good info.

Us guys on here have some great knowledge and experience but try to get the correct oil and weight for that compressor.

In 2003 I installed a new rotary screw compressor at the manf. plant at where I worked. The compressor sales guy and the instructions were very clear, 0W-40 synthetic, made by the manufacturer.
