Electric motor

I picked up a small electic motot with a gear reduction unit. There is no I D tag or wiring diagram. It has three leads coming out of the motor. How can I tell if it is single or three phase and what voltage it is to operate on? Thanks in advance. J.

Just a guess with no diagram or color codes etc., but if theres 3 leads,,,,,,,,none have a connection to the case/frame,,,,,,,the resistance from any one lead to the others etc are all about the same,,,,,,,No kind of any centrifugal switch,,,,,,,,,,,, ID GUESS IT AS A THREE PHASE and further take a guess its single voltage (240 or 480) 3 phase. Darn if I know

No electrical expert here, John, but any 3 phase equipment I've seen has four leads. One is neutral. As far as voltage, hp and RPM it's anybody's guess without a plate. You could try an electric motor repair shop. If it's got brushes it could be DC and need a controller.

Mike, if its Delta wound I wouldn't see a need for a Neutral, but if its star Y wound I see your point. Any new thoughts???????

Take it to an elctric motor shop, they can take measurements of the frame and give you a better idea of what horse power it is. With that you can find out what the full load currents should be.

Three phase motors do not need a neutral. Ground- yes but no neutral. Three hots and she'll run. Ground so she don't kill ya...
