put one of the chains back on, and hit it with the impact. spun that thing right out. about the size of a shallow 5/8 impact socket. the inside has threads in it that screws on the end of the drive motor. the snap ring did nothing, as well as the splines. i suspect the double sprocket was also used to drive something else too, thus the splines. got to get a bearing splitter and puller on there and pull the sprocket off, then i should be able to get the drive motor out of there. never saw a nut like that before!!! heres a couple of pics.

crazy looking nut

Glad it came apart OK. I've got to say I have never seen one like that, it is one strange looking critter. I hope the motor isn't the problem because if it is, good luck finding another like it, or a shaft to repair that one if needed.

That said, if there is a problem with the motor, you might give the guys as SHP hydraulics in Pacolet, SC. They can take shafts that have, say a seal groove cut in them, and repair them instead of replacing them. I know they did the drive motor off of a Ghel skidsteer for me awhile back. In that case the sprocket was part of the shaft and the shaft had been eaten by a failed bearing. The new shaft alone was going to be over $3000, but they repaired the shaft, and rebuilt the motor for just over half of that.
