hey NCwayne skidsteer question

wayne, i know you work on a lot of heavy equipment, need some advice here. i have an older prime mover skidsteer, l1200 model. i need to remove one of the hydraulic drive motors to get rebuilt. the manual says to remove the nut that holds the drive sprocket off the motor, torque is 300 ft lbs. but i cant get to the nut. there is a steel "cover" over the access for the retaining nut. it has a square hole for a 1/2 inch rachet. there was a circlip on the outer splines, but removing it doesnt do anything. somehow i need to get that square drive cap out of there. any ideas?? heres a couple pics. the drive motor is a ross trw mae24029.

Id say your looking at the nut going by the raised areas to the right of the corners of the square broaching. This is typical after heavy torque has been applied.
 
As big of a PITA as it is, the first thing I"d do is hook at least one of the chains back up. Without it holding back on the sprocket your more than likely going to turn the motor before you get either the plug, or the fastener that"s supposed to be behind it, loose.

From there it"s just a matter of getting something big enough to get it loose. Personally if I couldn"t get it with a long 1/2 drive, I"d use my 3/4 drive, a short extension, and a 3/4 to 1/2 impact adapter. Basically if it doesn"t move, get a bigger hammer. On that note, you might also try using a punch and hammer and give the plug a few love taps around the outside to help free it up. You"d be surprised at the things I"ve tried, and tried to get loose, and then gave a few whacks and they all but jumped loose.

Based on what I see in the pics and what your saying, I hope this will work because it"s what I would do if faced with a similar situation. Let me know how things work out.
 
Thanks, I ll give it a try tomorrow. I do have a one inch impact too!! I cannot figure out what the snap ring is supposed to do. It sits Back about one inch on the splines, but there is nothing in the groove, and it doesn't hold back anything. You can see the groove in the pictures. From the manual pictures, the shaft is tapered and has a single moon key.
 
Hey again, I just saw the post on the crawlers board where you said in the caption that the problem was the square did nothing but turn the motor. When I posted here a few minutes ago I thought about that, hence my first suggestion to hook a chain back up. At the same time I also figured you might be trying to hold it another way and the cap was just extremely tight, and being a PITA. That said, it still might be tight, but I'll just about guarantee if you hook one chain back up it will come right out. Good luck.
 
I haven't worked on one of those before. That said, usually when I see something like that I would expect to see a disc being held on the splines to carry oil up onto the sprocket for extra lube, or something like that. Beyond that its hard to say without having a parts book or having been into one personally.
 
Normally I would expect to see a brake disc on those splines... Does it have a parking brake?
As far as the sprocket is concerned... I'd also rehook at least one chain and get the wheel wedged or on the ground, then remove the plug and see what's behind it. I'd also try and find an online parts breakdown of that so you can look at what's in there before you break something...

rod, it does have a parking brake on the front driven sprocket. i have a parts breakdown and a shop manual on this unit, but it shows nothing of the cap or circlip. all the manuals say is remove the retaining nut to remove the drive sprockets. it shows a standard nut in the parts diagram. it does not show the circlip or that square drive cap. it does say to torque the retaining nut to 300 ft lbs.
