1/2 Masterforce Hammer drill losing power

I took the drill apart. The part that the brushes push against (commutator?) was dirty. I cleaned the brushes and that other surface with 320 sandpaper and cleaned them with Lacquer thinner. I re-assembled the drill and after a few minutes of operation, and allot of arc-ing it quit again. The commutator was black again. Are the brushes shot? What next?
thank you

if the brushes are at least 3/4 inch long the armature is bad look for burn spots between the copper bars the brushes run on before cleaning and bearing can cause it but brushes first then armature replace i rebuilt a many of hand tools air and electric some times the old tool is so far gone to repair

Take it apart again, use something very thin and clean out the carbon between segments on communtator. I use emory cloth to polish communtator. I have used tooth pick, razor blade, then use air. If you still have flash over, you need a new armature.

I just cleaned my 18v dewalt. Communtator was black, flash over all around. Drill came to a stop and started smoking. If wires on armature are black and smell, good chance it fried.

Mostlikely cheaper to just buy a new drill.
