Magnetized Pipe

I am not a pro welder, but I can make things stick together pretty well. My brother, no pro either, was building a bit of fence a few days ago and came across a magnetized pipe the requisite blow back and so on.

What is the best way to overcome it? He finally got it to cool down by wrapping the ground wire around the post and grounding to the post instead of elsewhere on the fence.

Take your welding lead and wrap a couple, three turns around the pipe. Try it. If it doesn't help wrap it the other direction. Try more or less wraps.
I welded a lot of it when I was in Anchorage working for a piling company - using used drill pipe for piles. That's what we did.
30 years ago now. Time flies...

Off the subject, but I've been dying to get down to greater metropolitan downtown Snook and get on the outside of some of that chicken fried bacon that joint down there serves. Is it as good as it sounds?

I don't eat chicken fried bacon often, but when I do I prefer the Sodolak's of Snook variety as opposed to others that I have eaten. I do take a nitro pill with me, just in case. :)

This brings up an interesting story. Used NG pipe is radioactive and treated as a hazardous waste. There is a small amount of radioactive material in NG, most of the pipelines are 50 years old and it accumulates over time.

havent ran across that type of pipe before but good nowledge yall from snook i am in pendleton is it a joke or do they have good fried chicken

How big is the pipe? I work for a large gas pipeline company, 36" & 42" pipe. We use a "smart pig" to check the integrity of the pipeline. It is technically called a magnetic flux leakage tool, this pig is looking for changes in wall thickness of the pipe where it may be corroded or damaged. Running this pig is like running a magnet inside the pipe and it WILL magnetize the pipe. Then if there are any repairs to be made our company welders have to de-magnetize the pipe by wrapping welding leads around the pipe and connecting these leads to another welding machine then sometimes thet use a small welding rod or compass to tell when they have the pipe demagnetized. Actually pretty neat. I have worked for gas pipelines for 32 years never heard of the radioactive thing though that would not surprise me. And it think radioactive and magnetic are to completely different things. Jim

Wouldn't really matter if you used the ground or stinger lead. We always use the stinger as it was there with us and the ground might be hooked up 30-40' away.
We drove pipe through the permafrost down to a solid base then welded I beams on top for foundations for houses and townhomes.
