SHEET Metal Gauge

Want to dump out a bucket of confusion? Look at some sheet metal and wire gauge charts! LOL

Never knew there were so many different ways to measure... Steel, galvanized, aluminum all have different thickness per gauge, not much, but different.

Appears that aluminum sheet and wire gauge are the same, at least with a quick check they do.

When I bought truck load lots I would specify the decimal range along with the nominal gauge number. Low decimal can mean a lot in a 48,000 pound load. Aluminum and copper is sold by decimal and am not sure they use a gauge number.

I never understood the gauge thing.
Why not list the thickness in fractions or decimal, its so much simpler.

One of our buyers checked the thickness of incoming rolls of steel. After he had collected sufficient data to know who rolled the steel the thinest, he would usually buy from that company. He'd buy steel by the pound and the company formed it and sold it by the foot. He made a lot of money for the company.

That was somewhat I did but I was building non-UL steel tanks and dumpsters. I also retailed some sheets to smaller shops. I bought mill seconds and overruns
