chain hoist

I have two chain hoists that are the older style with one continuous chain that runs around 2 pulleys on top with cogs that match the chain links, and 1 smooth pulley on the bottom. My problem is that both hoists have twists in the chain. What is the best way to get the twist out? Thanks.

They have been set down and picked up with the block/pulley going through one of the loops. Lay them down and flip the end through the loops until you figure out which way is straight.

Ends up very much like untangling a ball of rope. Just takes time and study and keep tugging and flipping.

Somewhere the chain got rolled over and looped through itself, you need to undo that same action. Can be a puzzle, but spend some time on a lazy evening and it will suddenly be right and you won't maybe even know what you did. Kinda have to do figure 8 and then put the chain through itself sideways, makes no sense to describe, but how it is.

Back when I was a tractor and equipment dealer Id buy such items at auctions and found many like JD mentioned which had been hauled around and laid on the ground and got twisted. Id hang them up and then take the bottom end and flop it in or out (thru the open loop) one way or the other until all was straight again.

It worked just like you said it would. Took hoist apart laid chain on floor 2 or 3 times put back together, chased twist around, and all of a sudden my step son said I think we got it. Looked and sure enough chain was straight. Not sure what we did or how we did it, but second hoist went a lot quicker. Thanks!
