Protecting tools

Found one thing NOT to waste money on! Never had any problems where we live but I got a keyed lock box with a steel cable to fasten to the truck seat for just in case times.

Opened the back door of the truck this morning and found the box had been cut off the cable. It was empty but still gets the blood pressure up! Took couple of old wrenches (1 long handled 1/2 drive ratchet was one of my favorites!) and a box of a dozen packs of sandwich crackers. Total loss maybe $60. No big thing...my wrench still ticks me off!

Reason for this post - if you have a Tractor Supply lock box, don't bet on the cable being hard to cut!

I never leave a truck or car outside. I have way too much invested in my tools in truck. Park truck in pole barn with a security system wired to my bedroom. Shot gun in bedroom. Security light over doors. Doors face bedroom. SO FAR SO GOOD.

Guy, One Story out of Deep South Texas a number of years ago goes like this here.......
A group of Hunters were down along the Border hunting Deer, Night fall came and they thought they would go get a Steak, Drink some Beer and Tequila, and watch the pretty little Mexican girls in a particular Bar!!!!
Not wanting to leave their guns in Deer Camp they locked them up in their crossover tool boxes on their Pickups. They were in three pickups, 3 different makes of toolboxes.,,,,,,the evening went Long, lots of Beer and Tequila was drank. when the guys came out 2 of the 3 pickup tool boxes were opened up Like a can of beans the lids were twisted, and mangles, Guns were history!
One tool box was a pretty nice Aluminum tool box the next was a mid grade steel Tractor supply type Box Both of these were ripped open in short order, But the 3rd.... ,
Was a RKI, Rawaon-Koening Inc. it had evidence of being worked on hard, BUT!, the latches held, the integerity of the lid Held, the Rifles that were inside......WERE STILL THERE!!!!
Enough Said one get what one pays for!

A contractor once told me he got his tools stolen often, then he bought some cheap tools and put them in a locked box and left his good tools covered up in a unlocked box. They would always steal the ones in the locked box and not bother anything else.
Guess they figured if they were any good that is the reason for the locked box.

It won't stop there unfortunately, the thieves will come back in a few weeks or months when you think they have moved on . What they are after is the replacement tools you will have had to buy :x
The decoy box is a great idea , old and fitted with three padlocks and full of rocks . The idea is to have the low lifes waste their time and energy trying to get into an impregnable box that [u:f92b519bb1]must[/u:f92b519bb1] have something valuable in it .
I don't know if these are legal over there , they are certainly not down under , but then they are really easy to make .When one of these goes off all hell breaks loose. Trouble is you might have a brown mess to clean up out of the back of the truck .

There's always the option of putting 100 decibel sirens in with an alarm system. Know of a guy who has 2 in the back of his work truck, aimed at anyone opening the cap. He's got video of what appears to be the same guy, driving the same car, getting blasted by it, twice.

Since it's a 12 ga BLANK, there's no reason why it should be illegal. It's not like it was an actual piece of ammunition, any more than a .22 cal blank, but a heck of a lot louder.

Hey there's an idea, maybe if I leave my tool box on the seat with key in the ignition maybe someone will steal my '06 F350 with 6.0.

I bought a new sliding bevel miter saw. Used the box to clean up the dog poop around the yard and set in truck box to drop off in dumpster. stopped a Wally World and some low life stole the box
