Welding on corn head snapping rolls

I would like to try and build up the snapping rolls on a JD corn head. I have a bunch of old ones to play with. A couple have been built up at some time and looks like they used stainless as the weld is shiny. I have an electric welder and a mig welder with gas. Suggestions.

To me, a shiny-looking weld on a part like that would indicate the previous guy used a heard-surfacing rod.

I"m not sure how the other guy"s suggestion of using a 6013 rod on top of that is gonna work????

I can barely make a simple weld hold, but I'd suspect it was hard face rod as well.

The guy that does my welding said the hard part is fixing up previous welds by us farmers - as different metal combinations melt together its hard to know what type of rod will work with the previous combinations.

Not too critical on a simple build up, you aren't holding anything together.

Also, are these old cast rolls (then, are they cast iron or cast steel?) like a NI and you need to build up the notch, or are these steel like a newer plated roll and you need to build up the edge, will depend on the rod that is best.

Is your welder rod or wire?

But it's just building up, dad would grab the stick welder and weld in the notch with whatever stick was in the welder at the time, so its not too critical to get something going on.

Probably depends on type of rolls. The older style rolls you just wanted to get a rough surface to grip and not actually build up any material, like the rougher a piece of sandpaper will grip harder than a piece of smooth paper. Now if the newer style and square corners are rounded off and you want to only square them back up then you will want a rod that you can grind smooth to get that square edge and never had to do that, only older type of rolls and on them the more splatter the better.
