Cutting oil for cutting threads?

I have been using CRC cutting oil lately. I like the aerosol can as it is a foam and sticks to the tap/drill pretty good. Can find it on sale for around $7 a can. They also have a liquid product in gallon and quarts sizes too.

ALAN I know you ask about oil,I use a product called TAP MAGIC.Works better than the black cutting oil I was using. Available at farm stores.GP

I don't know how good or bad this is, but Dad always used lard. It appeared to work as good as anything else of that period. I still have his old tap and die set, and it still cuts as good as it did 60 year's ago, even with the abuse I have given it a few times.

If you are doing a lot of tapping or threading bacon grease is better than plain lard for some reason. If you are only doing a few you can't beat tap magic. I have always kept a small can of tap magic around for harder threads.

I have found that when cutting threads on steel that is not free machining (cold roll falls into that category) that the dark cutting oils that are sold for threading pipe work very well. Otherwise Relton Rapid Tap has been the cutting oil in my shop for 40 years now.

Plain old shortening from your kitchen pantry works as well as anything.

commercially, I've been using hardcut on stainless for years, but it's expensive, and you have to buy a lot of it at a time, and then pay hazmat.

Here is how a pipefitter explained it . There is dark cutting oil that works good and causes cancer and there is light cutting oil which doesn't cause cancer and doesn't work.

Is there something wrong with the stuff at the store called cutting oil.

Ace hardware or whatever sells it.

is it wrong to use thread cutting oil as labeled?

Local plumbing supply will have it and the best available. Plumbers used to thread a lot of pipe. I used the dark oil specifically for hand powered threading.
