Replacement Stihl Chain Sprocket

I need a new chain sprocket for my MS 310. The sprocket is grooved where the chain runs. I called the shop; they are $68.00 new. He said he might have a used one in the bone yard. I checked Ebay and they had a replacement that used a reel rather than a sprocket. It fits over a sprocket but the chain rides on the reel. Has anyone ever used one? They are around 25 bucks with shipping.

I don't know what the reel thing is but if it was my saw and I liked it I would go for the new sprocket and be done with it. My 2 cents.

I have no experience with the so called reel sprocket nor have I ever owned a Stihl MS310 but I do own an 029 and an MS290.

New stihl sprocket for the 029/290 are less than $20.00 at my dealer.

Stens lists a normal Spur sprocket for your saw.

.325 pitch 085-6337 $17.25
3/8 pitch 085-2697 $17.25

They look like the one in the picture.

Are you sure he didn't quote you a price for the clutch, sprocket and bearing( that might be $68.00)?

What I presume you're talking about seems to be called a centre drive sprocket here in OZ.

They're made by Oregon and Carlton at least and in my catalogue cost the same as a spur sprocket ($A 38.30 or 30,00 - you're lucky at the price above!). The rims are $A8.65.

I've used them and they seem to work OK.

There are 2 types of sprockets- the traditional spur drive like the one JDseller posted a picture of and the rim drive which I think is what you saw. The spur type has the drive for chain built into the clutch drum. The rim type uses a replaceable rim that rides on machined slots in the clutch drum. The rim drive will not fit on a spur drive clutch drum. I prefer the rim drive as it wears the chain less, but spur drive works fine too.

Here's another option for a source I trust, Baileys- http://www.baileysonline.com/Chainsaws/Chainsaw-Parts/Sprockets/

Little high ? thought mine was $18 at the stihl dealer, book says every 2 chains and it was around that time of wearing out the 2nd one or close, looks like the one JD Seller posted, also little bearing, needle type that you can replace at the same time if I recall correctly, parts manual is down in my tool box, would have to look again.

OK, it very much helps to use the right nomenclature. Your original sprocket and the one JD posted the pic of is called a "spur" The one that your dealer has suggested is called a "rim type" The difference being that the spur type is a once piece clutch drum and sprocket while the rim type is two piece. Short term the spur type is cheaper to buy and thus found on homeowner type equipment. Long term the rim type is cheaper to maintain because the rims are 1/3 the cost of a spur clutch. The choice is yours. I dont know about the Ebay items? There is a lot of chainsaw "stuff" coming from China now like bars, chain, sprockets and all of it that I have been around is pure garbage. Oregon offers both a "consumer garde" spur and professional grade rim type set up for your saw. For no more $$ than you are talking about I would not chance a china cheapo from fleabay.
Oregon fitting guide.

I put on the set-up like you are talking about on my 038 over three years ago and I am very happy with it.
And yes I bought it from an e-bay seller.
An extra drive rim/reel was only a few dollars if bought at the same time, it is still in the spare parts drawer.
