Putting a dead laptop in the freezer

My laptop totally stopped working in February. Know just enough about computer problems to pronounce it dead.
I am pretty sure JDMaris mentioned putting a dead computer in the freezer for a day. I did that. Took it out of freeaer and plugged it in and nothing happened. Looked at about three hours later and the power supply was very hot.
But, the computer fired right up. A few hours later power supply temp was normal.
It is about 6 months it is working fine.

YES, I was not going to be stupid twice. I know I am on borrowed time. Mean the computer not me. I hope to have a few years yet.

I take the hard-drive out and just put the hard-drive in the freezer. Not the whole computer. With a lap-top - it only takes a minute to pop the hard-drive out.

Nuttin new, when I was a kid my uncle would put batteries or other for the day electronic gadgets (weren't many then lol) in the freezer ands it didn't seem to hurt maybe even helped lol

My wireless router heats up and quits working from time to time. put it in the freezer for a few hours and begins working again.

Lap tops and computers rely heavily on cooling fans. Especially in laptops. If one of the fans in a laptop (and normally they only contain 1-2) quits working, it will over heat and shut down.

Make sure the fans are working and the tiny grills are dust free.

Laptop coolers are a good idea. There are good ones and not so good ones. But anything is better than nothing.

I wonder if that would work on digital cameras. I have a couple of cameras that heat up if you put batteries in them.

I'll have to try it.

Yep! When the 9 volt battery in your shirt pocket radio went dead, the rumor was that you should wrap the battery in tin foil, and place it in the freezer overnight. I tried it a couple of times. Didn't work.

Actually reverse is true for batteries. As we all know from owning these tractors the colder the temperature less voltage the battery will produce. Placing a battery in freezing temperature storage will definitely not rejuvenate it. If that were the case every person in America would have a car battery sitting in their freezer.

Also wrapping up a 9 V battery in tinfoil is like connecting a wire across the positive and negative terminals you will dead short it and kill it immediately.

The reason we put electronics in cold storage is to quickly cool down the overheated electronic components. And this will only work if we have not destroyed electronic component by excessively overheating.

I had the same problem with my Direct TV receiver... Noticed it has a USB port on the back. Bought a $9 USB-powered fan at walley world... Works great.

(quoted from post at 09:08:34 08/05/14) My mistake - I read this as putting a dead lapdancer in the freezer. I was expecting a totally different thread......
understand the rational behind the lap-dancer in freezer but do not see rational behind freezing the hard drive??
