Turning Square Stock with 3 jaw chuck

I needed to turn some 1/2 inch square aluminum stock in my metal lathe. I needed to have a round end on part of it. I looked at the prices of a 4 jaw chuck and too much! Harbor Freight to the rescue! I took a HF 1/2 impact socket and it had a hole in the side for the snap connection and tapped that hole and put a set screw in it. Put the stock into the socket, tightened the set screw, put the round part of the socket into the 3 jaw chuck and worked like a champ!!

Excellent idea...would an extension from a half-inch socket set also work, or would the stock not fit tight enough?

Now that's using the old noggin !

Hope I can remember it if I ever need to do something like that.

Good idea. I am going to keep that in mind. Just going to have to try to recall it when needed

I'm surprised that the hole could be tapped. I would think that the socket would be too hard to taped. Glad it worked for you. Good thinking.

bore a hole thru a peace of round stock. then drill and tap for a couple of set screws to hold the square stock in place. remember the hole is the size of the diagonal of the square stock.

Here's another idea to think about. Might try making a saw cut, maybe half way down the socket, like splitting it in two, length ways. This would be with an impact socket that you could saw. By splitting it, about half way through, it would act like a collet and when you close the three jaw chuck, it would tighten down on the square stock. To change to another square stock, loosen the chuck take out the piece you've turn and insert another.
Might not work but might be worth a try.
Your idea was great but this is just another idea to ponder.
