Ford Jubilee 1953 8N- Battery and tool box

I just purchased a 1953 Ford Jubilee 8N. It looks and runs great. I believe I need a new battery because this one does not hold charge. I assume it is the right battery in there. My question is does anyone know what the specs are for the battery? I know it is a 6volt batter and the tractor is a positive ground. My neighbor told me I could put an 8 volt battery in there and it would give it more juice. Is this true? Would that hurt my tractor? Also would like to know if anyone can recommend where I can get a tool box for the tractor? Thanks

the first thing we need is to correctly identify the tractor, there is no such thing as a jubilee 8n, if its a 1953 year model its a golden jubilee naa, which is a completly different tractor than a 1952 back 8n,9n, or 2n, and takes a totaly different tool box, in a different location, as for a 8v battery some people do that but if you do the generator must also be modified to charge 8 volts otherwise it will only charge 6 volts, other options are to make sure all connections are clean, bright, and tight, then a 6volt will easily start the tractor, or convert it to 12 volt negative ground which can be done but it takes a alternator and some rewiring

Just thought I'd chime in about the 8 volt battery. First, if you can find them, they are expensive. If you ever need to jump start it, or use it as a jump starter, it really just doesn't work too well. If the system is 6 volts, keep the battery cables and clamps clean and forget the 8 volt battery.

Different tractor but the theory is the same , try making sure that the lead to earth [either positive or negative] goes as close to the starter as possible . Makes for a much easier pathway for high starting current .A big fat cable with well crimped or soldered ends really helps , especially with 6 volts .

Never replace anything without a definitive test. I thought that I had a bad battery because it seemed to not want to hold a charge. I took it to my local independently owned auto parts store and got it checked and it checked out good despite being 9 years old. I believe it is a Douglas, and they went out of business due to lack of repeat sales.

8v bats are only a source of problems, as the generator/regulator is set to charge a 6v battery.. thus leaving you with a near dead 8v battery soon.

better to fix the 6v system or move to 12 vs trying to go 8

tell us which tractor you have.. an 8n or a naa and we can get to generator testing. there was a field circuit setup change in the charge system between those 2 models .. they test and polarize differently

Best figure out what you have before you do more. At best an 8 volt battery is a band aid fix for other problems since the generator will not keep it charged and when was the last time you found an 8 volt charger.
That said the 8N was made from 1948 to 1952. The Jubilee was made in 1953 and a totally different modal tractor.
The 8N was a flat head engine the Jubilee a valve in hard engine

This May sound stupid but how do I find out what kind of tractor it is (model Number? Is it written on the tractor some where?

Ok, I looked at the tractor and it says Golden Jubilee model 1908-1953 on the front of the tractor. On the engine it says 6015-F, 36D12 A. Does this help?

People are prone to taking Golden Jubilee emblems
and installing them on 600's. If you are not
familiar with the various models you could have
wound up with something like this.

One easy ID is to look at the rear axles. in the
center of the wheel, the NAA/Jubilee has a large
nut and cotter pin, while the 600 series has a
bare axle end. The Jubilee has a hub and axle
shaft separate like the 8N and earlier, retained
with a nut. The 600 and later uses a one piece
axle shaft and hub like on most automobiles and
light trucks.
