EBay purchases

Is it possible to buy an item on EBay without using PayPal as a payment method.

I guess I'm still living in the dark ages - I don't like feeding my credit card or checking account information to the world.

If so, I have not been able to figure out how to do so.

I've stopped buying on ebay for this very reason.

Why wouldn't you??? if you use paypal, you get a guaranttee of delivery and "it will be as described" or you money back... Have done over 1000 transactions using paypal and on serveral occasions got all my money back when the seller went south...

Usually the seller lists what forms of payment they will take.
Some will even take checks, you just have to wait for the check to clear before they will ship.

Open new checking and credit card accounts and only use them for internet transactions. Move money in and out of the isolated checking account as needed. So far, I've had good luck using PayPal, many buyer protections, higher seller fees than I'd like, but what fees aren't too high.

Depends, If the seller allows it and is set up to take VISA you can pay that way. You can also pay in cash for items you pick up. Otherwise you are stuck with Paypal if you want to play on Ebay.

I understand your reservations as I resisted it for a long time but Pay pal is OK if your buying. Probably safer than any other electronic method. It is useful when things go bad with the transactions too. As was suggested here we have accounts that are used for nothing else but Paypal as an added measure of safety.

Just ask them before bidding if they will accept a money order or some other form of payment. A lot of the individual seller's will. The big business sellers might not. You don't know till you ask. The only difference is you will have to wait a while longer for payment to clear before they will ship. I've paid with a money order many times without any problem.

I've always used pay-pal for many years, no issues. I was warned not to use credit cards on ebay.

You can have pay-pal take money out of your checking.

I like the idea that my credit cards are protected, and pay-pal is more protection.

Thanks for the replies, and for the tips on opening a separate account. I'll talk to my banker about that - it sounds like the safest idea.

I stopped selling on eBay just because of the GYPOPAYPAL Money Grabbing Policy. I buy frequently by emailing each seller and requesting another form of payment. Lot of extra hoops, but it works. Be very sure if you establish a paypal account it has a low credit limit as there are scammers from ??? waiting to send you a check. You'll hold the bag and loose it all when it's all said and done.

Separate account is the way to go. My wife and I have a joint account. I have a separate account in my name only that I use for online transactions. I don't keep much money in it, but will add if a purchase is more than the account has available. Been using that system for years. Never had a problem.

you can use other methods.. you can mail a check, use a credit card if the seller acceptsc credit cards.. You can also use western union to send the money.... so NO, you dont have to use paypal..

HOWEVER... if you use any other method, ebay can NOT help in a dispute if the seller says you did not pay. If you use paypal, ebay bought paypal and has it tied to its computers, and it knows that you pay, so then you qualify for the guarantee.

negatives to using ebay are:

they have access to your account so if you try to screw someone, they will simply hold the money till the dispute is settled.

If you dont give them access to your account to automatically add the money, they can cut you a check, but its a fee for cutting the check and mailing it to you.

I just bought the first item in years off of Ebay.
Can't use Payscam because of a jacked up deal pulled on me by a buyer about 5 or 6 years ago.
I emailed the seller Before I bid and asked if I could send him a USPS money order for the payment.
He said yes as long as it was sent promptly.
I won the item and sent the MO the same day.
Hey Payscam, if you are looking for the $86 you say I owe you all I can say is Keeeeep lookin...

Do not writeoff Pay-Pal. I too was skeptical. But in fact it is a good level of security on your part. Look in to it. It is actually becoming the norm in many stores.

Think of it this way. If you went to ten stores to purchase 10 things and paid by credit card 10 times, your credit card information is know part of and stored in 10 different store networks.

If you paid with pay pal, your credit card info will not once be needed to be presented other than the very first time that you set up your pay pal account. Pay Pal sends payment on your behalf and only Pay Pal retrieves payment from you from the pay method that you set up with them.

Most times it's not the seller trying to rip off the buyer. It's the buyer trying to screw over the seller with the buyer protection.

buyers won't read complete descriptions and then claim item is not as described when they find out the item is not what they thought it was.

I love paypal. more secure and you have buyer protection. If you do not get what you bought you get your money back. About the same as a credit card except you don't give your credit card numbers out over the net. I sell a lot of dollars worth of wheels that I get paid with paypal. Easy to invoice and instant payment before I ship. Works great on my export sales as well. Cost is about the same as credit card fees except paypal doesn't have the monthly charge for excepting their cards.

Yep, as a BUYER, Payshaft is GREAT, as a seller, not so much.

They really look after the buyers, at the expense of the sellers.

You can sell an accurately-described, perfect item, and have a buyer with buyer's remorse (or just a psychopath) file a complaint and Payshaft will give them their money back and pull out all the stops to take it back from you.

And, you, the seller will have NO recourse. Your side of the story is not important to them, and you have no recourse, PP's decision is FINAL (and almost always in favor of the buyer.)

I'm 72 years old. I've only used EBay for a very few purchases over the years. That's because my grandpa taught me that to buy something at an auction, you had to be willing to pay more than anyone else. He sold lots of stuff, especially livestock and surplus machinery, at various auctions, but I can't remember him purchasing anything.

As to PayPal, I frequently use it. I have a single credit card linked to it. No bank account, no debit card, and I don't send them cash. I feel very safe about the CC being used, as the credit card company will take the hit if there is any mistake or fraud. Never has happened here, but I think that is the most careful way.

We use a credit card for most all purchases, from food to clothing to gas to tires. It gives us a single point record of our expenditures, and we pay it off every month, so there is no interest. Again, if there is any dispute, the CC company takes the hit, not me.

A quick google search will get you the info from the horse's mouth. Yes, for most transactions PayPal is all but required. But there are plenty of exceptions.

Understand that there are quite a few reasons eBay pushes you to use PayPal. Back when checks and money orders were allowed, there were plenty of problems with sellers (scammers, actually) taking money and not delivering. And of course it's easier for a seller to stiff eBay out of its sales commission if a payment doesn't go through eBay.

I'm not sure what you mean about "feeding my credit card or checking account information to the world". You're giving that information to PayPal, not to the World. Whether or not you trust PayPal to keep that information secure is another thing, but eBay has a lot at stake if people don't believe PayPal to be secure.

I have been happy with my PayPal experiences to date. I understand there are folks who've had bad eBay/PayPal experiences, but it seems more people have had good experiences than have had bad ones.
eBay accepted payments policy

That is just not true.
I have sold for over ten years taking payment thru paypal. I ship UPS. I have had paypal give back a payments to a customer. I send them the tracking with proof of delivery from UPS and they put the payment back in. It takes a few weeks but I have not lost any money in those transactions. If you accept credit cards they do the same thing.

Regarding what you said about you ship UPS.
Not sure how things work in your neck of the woods but up here in Canada the courier companies will not deliver to a PO BOX address and they will not drive there pretty trucks down gravel roads to farm's and ranches.
So unless a seller will ship with USPS they don't get the business and it's on to the next seller that will.
I have no idea what you sell on e-bay but if it is tractor or farm related odds are good that your biggest group of buyers have a rural po box and are unable to deal with you.
I tend to plan in advance for spare parts and other seasonal and maintenance items I need, so waiting a week or two for the post office to deliver is rarley a concern.
I get accused of being a hermit sometimes but with the time and the cost of fuel to run to town I make better than half of my purchases online.

I do not sell a lot on Ebay. I manufacture wheels and tires for wheelchairs. The wheels are also used on cubmobile race cars and some soap box race cars. That is where most of my paypal sales come from. I have one wheelchair manufacturer in Canada that pays with paypal. I do have to have a street address to ship UPS. I have daily UPS service. Our post office is only open two hours in the forenoon and two hours in the afternoon six miles from the plant.

"That is just not true."

Dickel, you have been LUCKY. Sooner or later that crap will get pulled on you by a buyer.

NO need to take my word for it, there are all sorts of fleabay and Payshaft non-fan sites.

Take a few minutes and read some of the HORROR stories of what unscrupulous buyer have pulled on honest sellers.

Just because you have delivery confirmation (and sent an "as-described piece of merchandise) does NOT mean you are "home clear" 'cause if the buyer bitches about it, for ANY reason, Payshaft is gonna come after YOU. BT,DT.

Some would complain if they were hung by a new rope. I am sure you will find many more people happy with paypal than those that complain.
I bought all of my farm seed this spring paying with paypal. I buy my new boots, socks underwear, work shirts, Round House bibs and my truck as well as auto parts paying with paypal. More and more companies are excepting paypal for goods which makes buying as easy as clicking on a pay button without filling out forms.
When I have an unhappy customer I make them happy with the old theory of the customer is always right. I never take it personally! It is called customer service! You can't sell thousands of products on line as I do without having someone unhappy. I will send them a small gift with new product. If for some reason we have a mix up and send the wrong product, which happens when sending out several different products in the same size cartons, I tell them to give it to someone that can use it rather than send it back. Pinching the penny's will keep the dollars from coming in.
I think that those that complain about paypal you would find paypal is not the problem.
Paypal has made my life easier. Sorry some choose not to take advantage of it

I am a seller . I have been paid every way possible. Once you pay ,no matter what method ,the item gets shipped. If you are patient send me a money order.I get it ,two days later you get your item. Not much hassle. I have had drivers pick-up items and pay me cash from the seller.

I have a PayPal credit card that's tied to my PayPal account, so my exposure is limited.

They keep asking me to link in my bank account, but it's not required. As long as I keep my PayPal credit card paid off they got nothing to complain about.

Exactly the way I do it too.
No bank accounts, their card.
Handy for online purchases only, so I don't expose my 'real' Visa card.
Direct money from one paypal user to another is easy too.
Lots of places take paypal, not just ebay.
Even this site. handy

I have a paypal account also. And i also have a checking account just for Ebay to recieve money from paypal if i sell something not to buy stuff with.I only keep around 50 bucks in it and the account dont cost anything . I use PayPal but i pay thru paypal with my american express card. That way if i do ever get scamed on something i can dispute it thru american express and get my money back.

I have used Paypal for the past eleven + years and I have not had any problems. I have bought items in Indonesia, China, Europe and several hundred transactions here in the US using Paypal to pay for goods and services. I have had a couple of sellers try to stiff me but Paypal refunded my money, one of them was a guy in England who would never ship the item I ordered. So, I think it's probably the safest way to do business on the net as you are not giving your credit card/bank info to everyone you buy from, just Paypal.
