Sharpening chainsaw chain

For the first time in all my years I got unlucky cutting a 30" dia. ash log. Sawed through a 1/4" spike that was hidden within. (the spike is leaning against the grinder wheel in the picture) Son-in-law bought this sharpener years ago and never assembled it, gave it to me. I didn't think I'd ever need it, I've always touched up chains with a file. I'll have to admit I'm SOLD on the sharpener, works great- even if it was only for "touch-ups".

I've had close calls with horse shoes and barbed wire. I've sawed through the wire but so far not the horse shoe.

gtractorfan- I'm looking to buy a chain sharpener. What did you get?, where from?, and how do you like it?

By golly, you were determined to cut through that spike, ha! Nice looking sharpener, and I REALLY like your John Deere shop stool!

It's a Timber Tuff. My thought was it would be too easy to grind off too much, but this thing is user friendly. You can google Timber Tuff to see what they have.

A smaller saw would have been more noticeable, this one's a 28" bar (more teeth to do the job). Didn't know it went through it til a bit later.

I'll second on that sharpener. I've got the same thing and it works great. You can often just tickle the teeth to sharpen then. Sometimes you need to take a lil more if you hit something like a nail or worse but once you get used to using it you really don't have to take much off to bring them back sharp. I tell my customers it is much better to switch chains and bring me the dull one rather then beating up on the saw with a dull chain.

About 1 1/2 years ago I bought an Chinese made Oregon knock off from Northern Tool for $89.00 sale price. It has paid for itself 3 or 4 times over since and I do not burn wood.

My neighbor had a big burly maple blow over a few years ago. I was cutting it up and found a horseshoe someone had hung in the crotch lord knows how many years ago. It was three/four inches down inside the tree. didn't cut through it though, it whupped the chain first.
