Different experience at Lowes this morning

After breaking my right shoulder, I needed a way to pull myself up so I could get out of bed. Hooked a cargo strap to a front leg of the bed frame and ran the cargo strap up over the bed. That worked but hurt my left hand.

Went to Lowes, got an electric cart and found just what I needed in the electrical dept. - a 3/4" pre-formed plastic elbow. On the way to checkout, we met the lady manager of that store, who I have talked to a few times before. She asked about my injuries and my wife said that I may need help to get up out of the cart. Manager is too little; I knew she couldn't help me.

We checked out and my wife said that we were waiting for someone to help me up. Cashier gal was husky and said she could do that. She took my arm and hoisted me up before a young guy came to help us. He walked us out to the car and helped me get back into the car. Nice to know that some people care.

You're Absolutely right!.. I've had Excellent Encounters at Lowes also,,And Good Friendly People there KUDOS to them they'll always get my get My Business Larry

Quite different than my experiance with the local
Lowes.Looking for some roofing material and see
a rather frail man in is 70"S trying get some
bundled shingles on to a flat car.Ask if I can help and he says that he needs fifteen bundles.Another customer nearby hears the reply
and realizes there is no way this old guy can push that many to the front of store. We both start looking for some store employee to help this guy and can"t find anyone. They were all at the front of the store saying hello to incoming
suckers.I went to the checkout and asked to speak
to the manager. He shows up and had an attitude.
I still shop there but expect no help from the employees there. At least at the local Home Depot
the employees don"t act like they care.

I keep there phone number in my cell phone if I need help I call them and ask them to check if they have it and put there hand on it... It has worked every time for immediate help.... It works faster than pushing those help buttons....

Nutter tip if you find something sold out ask someone to scan the bar code they can do it with there phone and tell you if its on a stock shelf in the store...

I never accept NO as a answer in a Lowe's store unless it comes from the store manager... I have got a NO from a clerk and told them to go get the manager I want him to tell me NO to my face they have always worked with me....

I use to despise the place then I figured out a system that works to my advantage.... They will take anything back I look for stuff that has been opened and ask for a discount then counter they have always took me up on my offer :D Stuff like a roll of window screen etc...

When they have a parking lot sale I offer them a $1 no matter what it is I have scored some good stuff that way... One thing I don't buy anymore is a busted bag of sackcreat unless they have bagged it in a real strong plastic bag... I had the bed of my truck loaded and forgot about the busted bags of sackceat so put them in the passages side floor board... Every one of'em busted unloading them.... So much for saving a few bucks....

Guess it makes a difference where the store is
located. Small town stores probably have less
employee turnover and depend more customer
loyalty.

I live in a large metroplex, Dallas, Ft Worth,
Arlington area... Lots of stores, huge employee
turnover, rarely see the same employee for more
than a month, 10% of the employees doing 90% of
the work...

Their attitude toward customers is all are
potential shoplifters, and there is an endless
supply of new ones when they pi$$ off the ones
they have!

I have on rare occasion got them to mark down a
damaged item, usually something like plywood with
a bad edge. I'v asked about broken bags of
concrete, "Nope, not for sale, we throw them
away."

This is a little different, but it's still something that a Lowes employee did that impressed me there. I was next in line behind a guy at the checkout counter who was buying something like a dryer duct wall cap in a sealed box. The young woman at the register took the box and ripped it open. In it was an expensive De Walt cordless tool (I don't remember what it was). The guy tried to brazen it out for a couple of minutes, acted surprised and said he'd had no idea, but when the cashier called the manager and used a code number to indicate the problem, the guy took off.

I asked the cashier how she had known something was wrong, and she told me the package had felt too heavy. She figured the guy must have opened the box in his cart, taken the vent cap out and put the expensive tool in, then sealed the box with some quick setting glue. I told her that I hoped Lowes knew what a good employee she was. Her modest reply was something like, "Well, when you work here, you see a lot." I'm sure, but the point is, not everybody would take it on themself to do something about it.

Lowes has come a long way. My first experiences with Lowes were back in the eighties in North Carolina, where they started out. Their stores were big, their customer service was poor, and their lumberyards were a disaster. I guess they realized they had to get serious if they wanted to run with the Big Dogs. Now it's pretty much Lowes and Home Depot; many others like Builders Square and Home Quarters are history.

I do not go Lowes often, but I order materials delivered every summer. The guys bringing materials out are very good.
Everybody around here agtees Lowes carries dimensional lumber is a lot straighter and overall better quality then Home Depot. It might be different in other areas.

And to the Vets here, if you have a form of military ID, including a VA card, you should be able to get a discount, 10% I think, by showing you ID at checkout. According to Lowes web page, this is a any day any time discount, thought it seams stores in certain areas dont honor it any day, any time. If paying with card, you need to weight till the discount is applied before swiping, or youll probably have to twice.

My Dad uses Lowes a good bit because of the discount, and the fact that one of the ones he can choose to go to has a better parking lot than Home Depot.

Ace and True-Value can be better customer service, and quicker to get in and out of though .

Yep they use to play hard ball but changed... BTDT... They use to pay there salesmen on commission the good ones made a wad so they stopped that..

Unfortunately, shoplifting and theft is out of control in the DFW area.

Walmart has had to put their cosmetics in locked cases.

Since I started "sprucing up" the house, I"ve been in both Lowes and Home Depot a lot. I"ve heard employees in both stores talk about how shoplifting using the switch out described in this post is rampant.

I have a strong dislike of thieves. Just burns me up.

Several years ago before James moved to the farm and we were there only on weekends, we discovered on Sunday that the frig had gone out.

We called Home Depot told them our problem and we needed one delivered today. They said sorry, can't help you, can't get it delivered today.

We didn't have a dolly at the farm, so no way to move it ourselves.

We called Lowes, told them the story and the lady said let me get the manager and see what we can do.

In a few minutes she said they would do an override and get the frig delivered that day.

We went to Lowes and picked out a frig. The delivery truck came in while we were there. They practically followed us home. They got there so quick, I hadn't even gotten the old frig emptied before they were there.

The two delivery guys were very careful getting the old one out and putting the new one in. We were pleased.

Since then, we do business at Lowes whenever possible.

My experience isn't that good. I went to the closest lowes 15miles away to get conduit fittings.
The box to hold what I wanted was full. I sorted thru the whole box putting fittings in the boxes they belonged in and when I finished the box was empty and I didn't have what I needed. The employee who takes care of the electrical scanned the box and there were none in stock. This guy is very good and really helpful He actually knows his business. So a few days later my wife and I went to Oneonta to visit my brother in the hosp. Then we went to Lowes, in Oneonta again the box is overflowing I sorted it all out for them, and when I finished I had no conduit fitting. I did make sure I had the store number and the toll free number for lowes tho.

I used to dread going to Lowes or HD to hunt for stuff. Then I discovered that if I first look up the SKU numbers on-line for the items I want, I can key them into the Lowes smart phone app and it will not only show me the quantity on hand at all the local stores but it will also show the isle and bin number. You can also click the location tab and up pops a map of your store showing the exact location. It has greatly reduced the time I spend wandering the store looking for items.

Case in point, this past weekend I stopped at the local Lowes for a gallon can of Thompson's water seal. Computer showed 34 on hand. I get there and the shelf is empty. I ask the guy and he says they are out of stock. I say the computer says they have 34. He says the computer is not always correct. I said if it showed one or two I would agree but showing 34, they have to be somewhere. So he finally looks it up at the register and sees that the shipment just came in a week ago. He went to a manager who agreed that if it shows 34 they have to be somewhere. They combed the store and eventually found all 34 of them hiding behind an advertisement on another shelf.

Thank goodness for the smart phone app or I would have walked out without what I came for.

The good news is that while they were looking I used the phone to search Home Depot just up the street and saw they had a dozen cans in stock so I had a Plan-B. :)

All this proves is that you can't find consistent customer service ANYWHERE.

Some places Lowes is good and Depot sucks. Some places it's the other way around. Some places its both. Some places it's neither.

Then you start to talk about the independents and mom&pops... Talk about inconsistency.

Home Depot is 45 miles from my town. Loews is 60. I will drive to Loews before I will go to Home Depot.I was accused of stealing table saw blades at H D. I was wearing a T shirt and slacks at the time.Asked the manager where am I hiding them at.He couldn't give me an answer and just walked off.Never had anything but good help at Loews.

Hello David,

Yes they do! Home Depot as well. Many other places have the discount, BUT you have to ask! ID's are available in the county clerk's office,

Guido.

3 sets of 10 stand up from chair once daily. I think I hate Home Depot and Lowes equaly. I like the hardware stores with the little drawers where you pick your own [1 bolt each no package]. Then you write the price on the bag and go pay. Lowes near me can't even sell me a grade 8 3/8s bolt.Worst hardware deptment ever !

Whether this happened at Menards, Ace hardware, Rural King, or Bob's Drive-Thru Angioplasty, some people are more decent than others, respect the elderly and have a heartfelt need to help the disabled. I'm glad it made your day. Hope it is contagious and encourages others to do the same.

Where Menards are located they give HD and Lowes a real strong run for the money. It is always best when 2 of them are located across the street from each other and they have to compete.

Interesting comments about Lowes, Here is my story about them. I go 35 miles south to Lowes and cannot get any help to look for about anything that I need or want. Very indifferent to waiting on customers there. Case in point, Was going to buy a Hi Pressure washer , no help to be found, went to the service desk. Stood there watching two guys yakking about nothing for several min, not interested in helping me. Finally I said something about needing help about a washer, there response was; we do not sell them ! I just looked at two setting on the floor. Needless to say I left and have never went back.
Now I go to Lowes 45 miles north and get great service. Have bought several large items there and are happy with them up ' north'

60 acre hillside- I'm sure she meant nothing negative from her post.

Calm down a minute and take a deep breath.... aaaHHH, much better now.

By your standard should we also have Dick2 change his name to Richard2?, or how about rusted nuts to oxidized fasteners? Where will it end?

I would have just helped the old guy myself.

(quoted from post at 15:03:27 07/22/14) Nancy, Please do not use that abbreviation for a REFRIGERATOR

Why not? Is that any worse than the misuse of many other words here? In this thread alone I have seen "there" used repetedly for "their". Is that okay?

Dave. my boss goes to Drogen's for conduit and fitting's it's in Oneonta on River street. My experience with Lowe's and Home Depot I almost consider humorous. I walked in and asked if they wanted to sell me a lawn mower both places couldn't went to Sear's less than ten minutes loaded mower on the truck. Couple day's later I got credit card's from Lowe's and Home Depot. Mower was under $1000. Greg

cousin got a rider at Sears. It cut uneven. They sent a kid out to fix it and hew could not. They wanted to return it and there was a pickup and restocking fee.

Went to lowes and got a green one she liked for less money. Lived hapily ever after.

the moral of the story is that all sears are not alike and neither are all Lowes.

Why I thought it was funny was when I was in my 20's I had equipment dealer sell me a new baler on just a hand shake and I never left them hanging. That was over 20 years ago and a lot more than $1000, and I made a lot less than I do now! Greg

Nancy Howell,
It's not always the thief that shrinks the inventory.

I know a guy that was on garbage pick-up at some of the larger department stores, I went with him a few times and you wouldn't believe all the good stuff in the dumpster (only the driver can open at the dump) but can't take it. Thousands of $$ every day, day in day out.

I'm thinking some is . . .

1) Broken returns.
2) Discontinued items.
3) Items sent in as samples (not to be sold).
4) New employes thinking they can get it after work.
5) Customer opened bags (e.g.), socks, shirts, undies, pillows.
6) Huge amount of customer returns to be put back in inventory,
but too close to quitting time. So in the dump chute, who's to know?

Not to make lite of theft in stores, but it's not always the customer either
I went in our CTC store for 10 switch boxes, only 4 on the shelf, called the
service guy over for more he checked the computer inventory, computer said
only 1 in stock, why did I have 4. The computer stole 3.
I had to take them back, wrong type now things are going to be more screwed up
in their computer. Years ago I called ahead for a bed liner 6 in stock ½ hour later
none to be found, did the store loose them because they were on sale or miscounted
or stolen.

Mom's fridge went out on Fri night. Since they are close by and offer same day delivery in emergencies. Delivery schedule could get it there Monday. Called Monday, Not on delivery schedule. Model you want is not in stock but should be here THursday. My poor dad was duped into taking the floor model but then couldn't get on the schedule for Monday deliver. We borrowed an appliance dolly and went to get it in my little pickup. Had to wait and wait for somebody to take care of paperwork to get the fridge brought up front. Then couldn't help me load it on my truck. I was HOT! Then, couldn't get owners manual or warranty info from either Lowe's or the manufacturer. Not planning to go back.

At sixty and after two open hearts I DID HELP.
I don"t work there.I expect the youngsters who
work at Lowes to do what they"re payed to do.When
I was their age I worked hard and still do.So
what do you say now?JimAnderson

"Nancy, Please do not use that abbreviation for a REFRIGERATOR"

Why Not?
I think Nancy can use any abbreviation she wants including any of the new ones we older fellows have to look up for the meaning.
Thomas

Hi I think there might be some letters missing from Nancys spelling, It should maybe read Fridge as the abbreviated term. The word Nancy inadvertently typed is not very nice, that may be why the comment was made.
Regards Robert

I like Lowes. I like checking on line to see if they have what I want, BUT Lowes have a very badly organized web site, and if you should happen to spell something wrong, they will not have it. Or if you do not call it what they call it, they will not have it, example, weed whip, string trimer.
