Painting basement floor

Thinking about painting my cement floor. Its not wet but can run 40 degrees cooler than outside temp in summer-very dry in winter due to wood burning furnace . Was planning on cement sealer undercoat with a interior porch / floor finial coat paint. Suggestions please. Thanks

I bought my house in 1977. Someone painted my floor. No idea what they used. Just wished they never painted it. Paint shows up on socks.

We painted garage floor with the paint recommened. Prep it the way they wanted it. Must not of gotten it right. Wished I never painted it too.

If I were younger and wanted to do something with ny basement, I would put down 12 inch or larger cermanic tile and never worry about a water leak causing a problem with carpet or paint flaking off and getting on shoes and socks.

I think the most expensive part of cermanic is labor. Do it yourself.

About the best floor paint you could use would be an epoxy garage floor paint. It comes in a kit with the hardener and the floor cleaner. The only thing extra you would need to buy is the speckles if you desire it. It's really easy to do. The hardest part is having to stop every couple of feet and apply the sprinkles as you go.

Shortly after I built in 93 I set out to paint my basement floor. My SIL managed a Sherwin Williams store and recommended H & C concrete stain. After getting 1/3 done and liking the look, we found out they had changed the formula to a more environmentally friendly one and the ne formula did not match the already done part. After lots of haggling, etc. We got a refund and I bought regular old cement floor paint in a tan color from a HD or Lowes type store. I put it on and its been fine ever since. Only shows wear in the heaviest traffic areas like bottom of stairs. I know one thing it sure cuts the sweeping dust down.

Epoxy is good stuff and will last forever-IF applied properly. The floor needs to be absolutely dry, kind of hard to come by in the basement in the summer. Tightly tape a 12" square piece of plastic to the floor and walk away for a day, then come back and take it up. If there is moisture on the underside of the plastic, don't paint. I would worry about epoxy fumes in the basement too. Winter would be better for dryness, but you can't ventilate as easily and your heating system pilot light might make a BOOM!

I painted a cement floor in a wood grain bin-turned- garage with a latex garage floor paint as an experiment and now four years later it's holding up, but I don't know if it leaves any color on socks or not. Jim
