Disposing of an LP Tank

I recently stripped an old camper down to a flatbed, recycled the steel/aluminum, but do not know how to get rid of the lp tank. What to do?

Thank You,
Glenn F.

Put a hole in it and it's just scrap metal. Refrigerant tanks have a knock out to make it easier. Scrappers don't care as long as there's a good size hole that's easily seen.

Dropping it off at a refill place is a lot better. How you get the hole into a propane tank...that can be a tough ride.

Take the valve out of it and drill a hole in bottom with 1/2" drill and take to scrap yard.
That is how they told me to bring old tanks to them.

You might try selling it.
What size is it? How does it mount? What are it's demintions?
I would not mind having a larger tank on my motor home.
What is your general location?

I shoot holes in them with the .22 and take them in with the scrap metal. Guy at the yard that looks the loads over before you unload says that is fine.

If its a side saddle frame horizontal mount type like used in some trailers and motorhomes, I agree with my friend the good Dusty man SELL IT. However, for RV use and to be of most value, it needs the modern Overfill Protection Device so an RV station can fill it with their hose GOT SIZE AND PICTURES???????

Those are usually at least 30# maybe even 40 or more. However if its just a small upright typical 20# do as posted below or still sell it. It needs the modern screw on Overfill Device versus the older left handed POL to have much value. An upright 30# (like many 5th wheels use), is also valuable for RV use.

Also if of a certain age dealers aren't supposed to fill them, but Ive never had anyone look or challenge that.

Horizontal tanks made before (I think) 1993 don't have to have the OPD, as there is no way to manufacture an OPD that will work with those tanks. Mine is original to my 1985 boat, and sits in a custom built locker, so I don't want to have to replace it. I've never come across a place that can't fill it. And yes they need to be recertified after (I think) 12 years, and every 4 or 5 years thereafter. I had mine recertified at a propane distributor and that cost me about 4 bucks.

How to get a hole in it? Back off 100 meters and check sighting on the 30-06, that"ll put a hole or 2 in it. Some tracers and incinderary rounds show up at the surplus shows- still close enough to July 4th for some fireworks (Teasing Alert!) . Valve removal isn"t hard with the right oversize nipple wrench tool, a little slower with big pipe wrench- then let set upside down a couple days, light a long fireplace match and wave it by the valve hole. Harbor Freight has/had the air tank hose kits awhile back and I got 2 tanks yesterday with valves removed- one will become a airtank and other will become a wood burner stove for cabin, camper or garage use. Exchange it for a full one and sell that? I don't know if you can exchange larger tanks but certainly a BBQ tank... just exchange it. They never ask any questions here... they just take them, recert them if necessary and move on. That's their business.

We have a motor home that we bought new in 2002 and it has the OPD on the LP tank.

Yeah mines a 2001. I think that OPD system has been around several years and in my lay opinion its better and safer then simply the older POL fittings.

Maybe we will meet up again in 2015 at Flywheelers or even Zephyrhills??

Yes John. Or if you ever travel up into Michigan on I-69 I'm only 1 mile off it.
