Want to lift a (very) old hand pump from the windmill well. Expect to need to clamp the drop pipe to hold it in place while I re-rig the lifting apparatus.
What do you call the kind of clamp which grips the pipe and prevents it from slipping down?

Suggestions?

I don't know what you call them, but check out Ebay. I've seen them listed on there. Just look up well pump.

a pipe wrench just below the junction should hold the pipe. just place it on the pipe instead of the junction. That is what the well driller used to pull my well pipe.

jCarroll, My Family most always had Well pulling tools. We called it "The Clamp, place the 2 in pipe in the clamp and start lifting up on the pipe as the next Collar comes through the clamp let the pipe back down ever so slightly so the collar rest On or Just above the Dog. The Downward force keeps the jaws of the Dog wedged against the pipe thus holding it securely! We called it "The Clamp". Hope this helps!

What we use on bigger drop pipe (anything over 2") is a flat plate with a slot in in that is slid on the pipe below the coupling. The plate needs to be thick enough to support the weight and big enough to rest on the top of the well casing. So it is just sort of a U. We often weld a short pipe on the end at an angle to use as a handle. Cheap and quick way to do the job. The coupling is always left on the top of the pipe still in the well.
