i am rebuilding a sickle bar knife assembley would serated sections be better than smooth for heavy grass? thanks

my opinion:
think serrated for straw
think smooth for bluegrass

is your grass more like straw - or more like bluegrass?

A smooth section becomes nicked and acts like a serrated section. Longer useful life with serrated sections.

Resection the knife half with smooth, and half with serrated - then report back.

We put up a lot of alfalfa brome hay, and liked the bottom serrated sections. We seldom needed to sharpen them. This was on a 7' semi-mounted IHC mower.

I always use the top serrated section on all the sickle bar mowers I rebuild but in this area we have a lot of mixed grasses and clover and of course some thick stem weeds. I also now only use the section bolt no more rivets

Depends on your guards. If they have smooth plate then you want serrated sections. If the ledgers are "sawtooth" then you need smooth blades.

I would not use under-serrated sections for grass! Top serrated maybe, but the best is smooth and they require periodic sharpening for best results.
