The cost of Roundup

Seeing that Round up is so expensive I have started to use other items for weed and grass killer.

1. I tried Lysol anti-bacterial spray, the wife had it on the kitchen counter so I used it on some grass/weeds and it works okay.

2. Bleach, smells bad when mixed with roundup and works good.

3. The Works toilet bowl cleaner, I will know more later tonite to see how it did.

What other items have you used to kill grass and weeds?

Disclaimer, I only used a few tablespoons of the above items to see if they work. Results may vary.

The chemical once only sold as Roundup costs around $35 for a gallon with 41% strength. Mix at 3 tablespoons per gallon of water. That winds being very cheap. One gallon mixes to make 256 gallons of lawn-strength weed killer. For $35 - bet it will be hard to do as cheap with vinegar, Lysol, bleach, etc.

The local farm store sells Roundup Powermax for $70 for 2.5 gallons. That's enough to mix up 160 gallons of hand spray mix at 2 oz of concentrate per gallon. Since roundup kills the roots and all the things you mentioned only burn off the foliage and cost more, I'd stick with the RU at $0.28 per gallon of mix.

Yes, Roundup or any glyphosate equivalent is actually the cheapest herbicide available. Maybe if you are buying those little bottles at the hardware store that cost $19 for a half litre it seems expensive but the ten litre (two and a half gallon) jugs I buy cost $66 each. That will kill at least ten acres of grass at the high rate. For easier broad leaf weeds it will do a good 30 acres with that $66 jug.

Hmmmm.....Yes,
I have not seen roundup in 2.5 gallon jug concentrate. I will have to look for it.
Tractor supply dont sell jugs of roundup in that size.

Thanks to all.

I just by the generic, Glyposate 41% from Tractor supply. They sell it under the Big and Tuff lable. I use it on my corn with no problems.

3 tablespoons of Roundup or generic equals 1 1/2 ounces. A gallon has 128 ounces and thus a gallon would make about 85 gallons of spray solutions for the lawn, ect. I use 2 ounces; getting 64 gallons from a gallon of concentrate at a cost of about 23 - 31 cents per gallon, depending on price.

John in La- That is true for the generic stuff. I try to buy Roundup in the fall when the prices drop because nobody is needing it. I typically pay $69.99 per 2.5 gallons at TSC.

You have to read the label......here in the great white north one can buy "commercial" Round Up which may contain 200-400 grams/litre of glyphosate "agricultural" Round Up will contain up to 750 grams/litre. These figures are approximate. Basically not all Round Up is equal.
As far as cost I agree it is one of the cheaper herbicides you can buy, but it has not always been the case. When I first started using Round Up 25+ years ago it was about $30/litre

I payed $28.07 a gallon for Roundup Powermax about a month ago. It comes in a 15 gallon returnable jug. If I remember it is 49% glyphosate.

(quoted from post at 17:17:23 06/29/14) Thanks,

Maybe I should open my fricken eyes when I go in that place huh?

The big jugs are back with the sprayer parts and plumbing, not up in the lawn and garden area.

That's about the regular everyday price here for RU Original... can probably get the no name stuff a bit cheaper... I would have thought it would be cheaper in US prices. Local coop may be cheaper than TSC, etc.

I paid 29.90 a gal. for powermax about a month ago. Comes in square 3 gal. jug wrapped in card board with cap exposed so you don't need to remove it from the box, not sure that is the best idea they have!
