Anyone have experience painting there metal buildings. My metal shop building is about 20 years old. The metal is in excellent shape but the paint has faded badly. It is now a badly faded green and I'm thinking of changing it to a gold color to match the house. I"ve seen a neighbors paint job that looks awfull rough. I think he used latex paint. I"ve heard that the proper paint to use is very expensive. Help! Thanks in advance. EGBinOR

I would check with your local Sherwin-Williams paint store.

They probably recommend a primer first, then industrial enamel. Sounds like a spray job.

Most commercial painting outfits use latex, since the building was painted before.

I work at a large orchard complex. Approx 15 yrs. ago they had all the warehouse buildings painted. A latex paint was used and is holding up just fine. They sprayed the paint directtly over the orig. Agway built buildings.

I've painted 2 of mine. One about 12 years ago and the other about 4. Both are holding up well. I used implement enamel in a spray gun the first time and brushed on the other.

I've been painting outbuildings for 20 years as a business and I have some building that were painted 18 years ago that still look good. I made sure there was no rust or dirt on them and went right over the old paint with a good latex paint. Sprayed it on and they turn out good. If you have rust then you need to use Rusty Iron Primer by Rustoleum.

The building I looked at was sprayed with latex but it was really rough looking. I"m assuming they used an airless that wasn"t that great? Should it be thinned a little? If so,how much? My building is good and sound, I"m assuming I"ll need to give it a good pressure washing first

Spraying is good to do on day with little to no wind. I know, no wind can make for miserable outside work, but the paint looks better when it dries on the building, not on you. One of my buddies sprayed his and did a great job too. Nice and breezy day. He climbed down off of the ladder, turned around and was a new bright red as the barn he just painted. Did a great job. Great job. I tried to paint a smaller one with a Wagner, and Wagners may work great, not for me. I ended up rolling mine using Rustoleum primer, and then paint. A Wagner won't spray Rustomeum, unless paossibly have larger jets. Rustoleum was too thick for the jet that mine came with, and don't try to thin Rustoleum. For the record, I don't have a Wagner anymore. Bought it for that job, and that was the end of that.

Good luck...try to keep being down wind of the sprayer a minimum.

Never thin latex paint. There is places that you can rent a decent airless sprayer. One tip is buy a nylon filter or strainer and after mixing the paint pour it over the strainer into another pail. There is a little "junk" sometimes and this will prevent plugged nozzles or filters. I also like the .15 nozzle size. The smaller ones will plug fast. Most sprayers will have a in line filter to protect the nozzle. If I run the paint through a strainer I can usually spray 25 gallons before having to clean anything.
