We had a kid move some shelves and cabinets in our small shop so the landlord could dig up the floor for plumbing repairs. One of them was the flammable cabinet. Told him to empty the shelves into boxes, label them Top, Middle Bottom. Cabinet was moved about 5-10 ft in plain sight. Boxes next to it.

Next day, before we put the cabinets and shelves back (wondering if the landlord was going to repaint the floor), had one of the other guys in the shop "clean up" a rough cut hole in an aluminum fixture plate with a file. (Another guy had made the cut). Went back to look at it and and you could see the "sharpie" markings hand-drawn around the hole indicating roughly what material needed to be removed. Asked him why he didn't clean off the Sharpie mark. His answer? "They moved the paint cabinet". Huh? Now, it's a bright yellow cabinet with "Flammable" all over it and if you were standing where it had been before, it would be darn near impossible not to see it. I must have looked at him kind of funny because he then said he "didn't know where they put the thinner". Now you'd think a person who knew the cabinets were being moved and watched the kid empty the cabinet into boxes, would take a little initiative and open up one of the 3 or 4 boxes to FIND the thinner. But he's the kind of guy who would do exactly what you tell him and no more (and admit to it). He'd sit at his bench with plenty of work needing to be done and wait for you to come up and tell him precisely what to do next. Well, work got slow and we had to make a decision on who to lay off. Guess who?

Sounds to me like "Just Maybe" that the
"Supervision" might be part of the problem if I'm
reading this right! Because I'm not sure I
understand what is written . correct me if I'm
wrong ! Jim in N.M.

Hi
I get what you mean from this, I have had run
ins with a few guys like that at a farm i worked
on.
The other guys i can't stand are the parts guys
that get paid for 40 hours whether they do
anything or not. Had a run in with a 30 year old
in town when I wanted a metric hose fitting. He
said we don't carry that type fitting and can't
get it. told him your a hyd supply company look it
up und order the !@#$ing thing. Nope not happening
so told him how useless and over paid he was and I
walked out.
He's still there, but when I go in now the old
guys are busy but always say hang on be with you
next and just leave the kid standing, even if i'm
his next customer. I did hear a rumor he might be
related to the company owner. So guess he won't be
layed off in hard times sadly, have heard from a
buddy that he thinks he's a waist of fresh air to.

I took a new kid out with me. To service four
generators.Unloaded his parts at the first genset.
Showed him what to do. I went down to the next one.
Came back to check on him. He was standing beside
the genset oil drained and filter off. Looks me
right in the eye and ask me if I wanted him to put
the oil back in. I told him that was the idea of a
service. Shook my head and did the other three
myself. Told the boss. The kid will never ride with
me again.

I am all in favor of raising the minimum wage but honestly there are some people that are not worth a plug nickel! I just don't know what should be done with them.

i've had the same issue with metric hydraulic fittings Robert. do you get yours in Brandon?? if so where??? my local hydraulic place claims they can't get (and i've seen their catalog, and metric aren't listed at all...

Many of you must have had Fathers that not only knew everything, but taught it all to you. I did not have that luxury, and many of today's youth do not have that either. When I started as a machinist. I was as green as grass. I only knew what I had learned in Tech. School. I am no where near the same person today, as I was when I started. I appreciate that this company was willing to keep me around long enough for me to learn enough to become the expert that I am today. Unfortunately, I am not a good teacher. Sounds like many of you do not want to take the time to help today's youth become better at their jobs.

For that matter.... Spit on a rag will take a Sharpie mark off, with a little rubbing. I deal with folks like that all day, they do not think, because they do not care.

The bad thing about this is the newer generation all
seem to be in the same boat. They have no
initiative, no desire to learn and just looking for
a payday. Who do we blame? The schools, the parents
or the govt. That same kid can get his girl friend
pregnant and they all live happily ever after,on
welfare. They don't need to work.

A lot of smarts comes from either going hungry. Or working hard enough and SMART enough to eat and have shelter.
Too few people go hungry because they don't work.
The only thing that builds the physical, educates mental and builds character is over coming obstacles.
Too easy of a life and the product is soft people.

reduced focus and awareness of their souroundings.

Many people are only aware of a bubble about 6" to a foot around them. those ar ethe ones that back up into you while standing in a line or in a grocery isle.

those are also the ones that do activities that may get them targeted for crime in publc spaces. like count their money or walk away from personal belongings.. those people live in condition green and almost never make it to orange.

Some of us are a bit more aware of our souroundings...

Hi any of the ones I have needed that i didn't get from my local Belarus dealers in town, came from motion Canada in Brandon.
sometimes they have to order but they are willing to do the leg work to figure it out.
Brandon bearing may have some stuff as well I think, but don't use them that often for hyd stuff, the other hyd/ rad place in brandon i don't use they messed me around on seals once!.
metric is not a common fitting co-ops and some dealers carry. Pipe and JIC are the most common. With some ORB thrown in on control blocks and pumps from what i find that they do carry on a good day L.O.l, and metric can be expensive because of it not being common
.A few European tractors/ equipment and some import excavators use the metrics, from what Anna the very capable parts girl & manager, said at motion one day when I was talking about it, and how much they supply of it.

Hi
If a kid has talent and learns from me teaching him i have no problem with the young guys.
I have been in the position of a kid that would try do anything you asked, but by the time I had explained it 20 times and showed him.
it was time for him to find his niche some place else, as I had done the job my self in the end, with him watching and still no clue. Nice kid but was never going to be a mechanic. He ended up leaving me, and running a sewing machine in a jeans factory, then when they shut down moved on to tractor driver, for a custom company hauling sewage, and is very good at it and real happy too!.

If I go to a business I expect service not have to be on their computer or books finding the stuff my self, because spotty kid can't be bothered.
Most guys are great and I have no problem with young guys, they just got to be in for the job and not a check.
Regards Robert

Don't do anything unless told exactly what to do and above all don't work out of your classification. Did he work in a union shop before working for you? Alcohol takes Sharpie marker off.

Perhaps some of these persons have done military time. "You are paid to follow orders, you are not paid to think".

"reduced focus and awareness of their souroundings."

Yep! Agree 100%. Ear buds in... Nose stuck in the phone texting...

Try talking to them, 5 minutes later the head comes up, mouth drops open... "Huhhhhh????"

"Never mind, I'll do it myself!"

Lack of experience and lack of ambition are two entirely different matters. Lack of experience (which is common these days) can easily be overcome. Lack of ambition cannot be overcome, no matter how much time you are willing to spend with them. (lack of ambition is of epidemic proportions these days)

What we are experiencing these days is the end result of almost 50 years of the "Great Society" concept. The end result was predicted by many when all of this free stuff crap was concieved in the mid 1960's. Nobody was listening back then either.................

thanks Robert... tried brandon bearing, but they don't do metric (and they showed me their catalogs...), will try motion canada, i have a claas baler and combine that use metric hydraulic fittings, blew a hose on the baler last year had to buy a new one as i couldn't find replacement fittings

HA!

As I drove slowly down a rural road a few days ago with a slap wore-out/rattling 6.5 Chevy diesel I came up behind a young man with a dog on a leash.

I slowed down to a snail"s pace as I passed him so as not to endanger the puprin.

At this point I saw the "ear buds".

I don"t think he ever heard the rattletrap I was driving, it was only as I passed and he saw me that he finally comprehended he and the pup were not alone out there!

NOT sure how it would have gone if a texting meth addict would have been taking the same route!

I got rear ended Thurday after noon, making a right turn, into my drive way. You can see for more than 1/2 mile and no one was comming. I was told that other driver said that she never saw me.

Anyone know where I can get a good used step bumper for an '89 E-150?

No, it was more of a "union" mentality that someone else mentioned. All the supervision in the world won't change that attitude unless the person wakes up and decides to change on his own.

And I agree with others that we all weren't born with all the knowledge we possess. I'm willing to help younger, less experienced workers that want to learn. We employ co-ops who are like sponges. And we find some are more talented in certain areas than others. That's ok. We all aren't good at EVERYTHING.

Attitude and work ethic in today's world are major parts of being successful at any job.

Hi OJ
please send me a personal forum message and i"ll get back to you ,this is getting way off topic about useless kids at work.

well I think both parents and schools are to blame. Now days they dont keep score when playing ball because someone on the loosing side may have their feelings hurt, so kids dont learn that if you want to win you have to put forth the extra effort to be better than the next guy. they arent tought to win they are tought to whine.
