help needed with Blackmer 525 hand pump

this is an "old" pump operated with a handle which you stroke back and forth. Bought it at auction - so have no history. Want to use it to pump gas from a floor barrel into tractors.

Pump will pump gas when handle is "stroked", but there is a plug in the top which has a vent hole that gas sprays out from. Plug looks to be 3/4 NPT, and the hole is on the side. Inside of the plug looks to be a factory check valve (I"m guessing here) with the interior parts staked such that field repair is not an option.

What function does this plug/valve provide?
Can I replace it with a solid plug?
Even the 525 model cast into the pump seems to be an obsolete number with Blackmer?

You could replace it with a normal plug, but you have nothing to loose by trying to take it apart and fix it. But first I would spray some lube into it and blow it out with compressed air, both ways, might just be a bug in it.

the company is still in business here is a part list for your pump
