Sealer For Cedar Shake Siding

I hope to be installing cedar shakes on our 14 x 14 foot cabin before winter. What sealer do you recommend to keep them looking new in our NE WI climate? We get a lot of weather here.

Thanks,
Glenn F.

Thompsons water seal.
Spray it on with a pump type garden sprayer.
It will still weather but helps.
I see a lot of people use deck stain on their decks, etc.
A couple of years later they have to scrape it where it's flaking off and reapply.
With Thompsons you just spray on another coat.
Easy.

Big no on the Thompson water seal, unless you want to do it about 6 times a year. That stuff is about 99.5% water and a dribble of paraffin wax. Use a Sikkens or Cabot product.. I am a builder

As time progresses, I plan on installing Cedar Shingles over my entire house, here, in SE PA.

In the fall, when I have some extra $$$, after paying propterty taxes, and the heating oil tank is full, I plan on covering some deteriorating T-11 that covers the garage section of my house.

Then after some storm, maybe the plastic siding will blow off the main house and I can negotiate with the insurance co. for shingle replacement.

Otherwise, I can purchase a few bundles at a time. So what....it may take me a couple of years.

Thanks.....John , PA CABOTS makes good stuff.

Make your own...boiled lindseed oil and varsol with paraffin dissolved in it...google wood sealer and see how to make it. It is cheaper than Thompsons, lasts ten times longer, seals better and does an excellent job. It is a fraction of the cost of purchased sealers.

Look into using a solid colored wood stain instead of a sealer. A solid stain lasts more than twice as long (8 years) for me as a semi-transparent stain (3 years). I had to re-do sealers every year.
