Hyd hose crimper oil. What kind?

We just got hold of an older used Weatherhead (I think) hydraulic hose crimper. It's a big devil, will crimp a 2" hose and has a separate electric/hydraulic unit. I've cycled it a few times and it retracts very, very slowly. My first thought was a restriction or weak return spring, but after I cracked the hose loose and got some oil on my hand I started to think the oil is too thick. When I rub it between my fingers it has the consistency that makes me think of 80-90 but it doesn't smell like gear oil. It's kind of clingy and sticky like 80-90 is.

I know a bunch of you guys have worked with these crimpers so could you guide me in the right direction as to what kind of oil they use? In the winter when the shop is cooler I have the feeling it won't retract at all. Thanks, Jim

All it has in it is an Enerpac type ram, and pump unit, that does the crimping. I have quite a few of them and technically they use "hydraulic jack oil. It seems to me to be a bit thinner than 10 wt hydraulic oil, but I have filled mine with regular hydraulic oil when nothing else was available, and had no problems.

NCWayne is on the money! It uses a hydraulic cylinder, so it should use hydraulic oil!! Hope it works out good. We use a fricking G**dyear machine and fittings at work and forever having die problems and other B.S.! Weatherhead and Parker are top of the line in my opinion. You probably ought to try to get all the old oil out and maybe flush/cycle the machine several times with fresh oil before using it the first time.
