Trying to put a single outlet box in shop ceiling to plug in shop lights, cut hole in drywall next to rafter went to hammer in box from attic but no way with the angle of the nail--went to lowes guy had no clue on another type of box.I don't like the type that just clamp to drywall, is there another box to use???

Get a handy box with nail bracket, something like this. Made in plastic also.

they also make a box with collapsable arms on each side meant to straddle joists. will do 18" or 24" spaings.

Just get an old work box with the "ears" on it, cut the hole and tighten the screws, or a single gang deep metal box and a pair of Madison straps and you should be good to go, doesn"t sound like you plan to support anything from it so you should be fine.

Pull the nails out of the box and put them in from the other side. Or screw it to the wood member from inside the box. Done both many times. Also in tight places put my pliers against the nail and hit them with the hammer. I know some would frown on this but you do what you have to.

I always use metal octagon boxes in ceiling, drill two holes in one side, use 6 inch screwdriver bits and use hammer drill to put screws in at an angle. Works for me. Don't know why you couldn't use a metal 2x4 box for a recept.

I have used these for years never had a problem i like them so much better than the straps or like another said screw from inside box to the wood.

Old work Box

Been putting them in for over 20 years and rarely if ever had any pull out, those that did would have anyway, if you had an electrician come and do it, that"s what would most likely be done, I like the round ones because I cut the hole with a hole saw and fish across, then pop the box in and I"m done, haven"t had to do that for a while, I try and stick with bigger things when I can.
