Question For John T

John , My neighbor has a Cub Cadet with the Delco starter/gen. setup on a Kohler 12 hp engine. Do you have a trouble shooting guide for that system ?? The regulator was beaten to a pulp , but replacing it ( with American made unit no less ! ) didn't get it charging. Need some guidance on this one ! Thanks ......Dale

Sorry, nope no troubleshooting guide for that particular system. However my generic guide still applies for the most part. The Starter/Generator is similar to a garden variety Generator (which is still a Motor also) except it has much heavier Field Coil windings equipped to carry way more current. Usually if it will motor and passes both tests, it will generate, but that system has some features that dont match my generic troubleshooting, so no warranty on any of this.

Besides, looks like Bob has already taken you down a better path.

PS Im not even sure if that heavy duty Starter/Genny is shunt wound (like a regular genny) or series wound like a starter, SO YOU BETTER GO WITH BOBS GUIDE, THANK HIM AND FORGET ANYTHING I JUST SAID LOL

John T Sorry no help

If the starter generator turns the motor over normally the armature, brushes and start winding are likely good. Every time you use the starter it polarizes the generator so that leaves a couple of other things you can try.

Make sure the base of the regulator has a good clean ground.

With it running check the voltage at the battery and short the "F" (field) terminal to ground. If the voltage increases you have a regulator or wiring problem. If it doesn't all of the above could still be broken. Good luck HTH Mike

Yo Bob, that was a great link, all you need to know about those starter/generators. As I suspected it not ONLY had a shunt Field BUT ALSO A SERIES FIELD so my regular genny troubleshooting procedure wouldn't have worked well. Glad I didn't hang my hat on it too much lol
