Generator problem, Help please

I've got an older coleman power mate generator with a 10hp tecumseh motor. It starts and runs great with choke on and 1 pull, then hurry to get choke off.

Engine was professionally serviced and carb cleaned about a month ago. It ran good for about 20 hours until this recent issue.

It will run for 5-10 minutes then starts missing and quits. It will start up again with choke on 1 pull choke off 1 pull and starts and runs good for another 5-10 minutes.

It's not the gas cap. Gas is fresh. I've dropped the fuel bowl and checked fuel flow. Its good. It's spotless inside carb.

Any suggestions on what to check next?

make sure vent hole in fuel cap is not clogged up

Hello,

Look at the main jet. There is probably just enough dirt to make it act up. Remember the fuel bowl goes back only one way, so the float can work properly,

Spark plug can do some strange things, change it just so you don't say "Wish I'd done that $100 ago!"

I had same problem with mine. Cleaned everything and still did it. Finally wised up took gas tank off. Guess what? It had a gazillion pieces of everything in it. Been running good ever since.

Put an induction type timing light on the plug wire & see if it is losing spark. Could be coil or condenser if it is losing spark. If not, go back to a gas flow problem.

I would start by cleaning the tank. I get them in all the time with trash floating around in the tank.

My good old reliable Honda genny got to where it would run for exactly four minutes and die, dead as a hammer. I replaced the ignition coil and it's good as new again.

I will second Steve's advice. I had my push mower acting up like your generator is doing. I cleaned the carb several times, cleaned the tank, and installed a fuel filter. Still would run a short time an die/stumble. Replaced the spark plug and all was well.

It's a common problem with Tecumseh engines and fix-main-jet carbs. One common fix it to install a better carb with an adjustable main-jet. You might be able to clean your's out - but since you said you checked it already - ??
