truck wiring for a trailer

just bought a car hauler. older trailer 7500 lb gvw electic brakes. i'm pulling it with a 97 F350. My truck is Factory wired with the trailer package. does anyone know where you can get a 7 prong hook up that won't need splicing. I really don't want to cut any wires. The factory plugins are in good shape. thanks

Auto Parts stores will the plug in kits. They plug in, in place of the one you have now.

So you've got a good socket on the truck, and a good plug on the trailer, but they're just not the same? An even better place to find an adapter is an RV dealer. I have a couple in my truck, so when someone borrows my truck or trailer, they won't be tempted to rewire it to fit what they have (as one moron did- and brought it back that way! He's no longer on my list of preferred borrowers).

Geeeeeeeee Mike, if I ever get to Crater Lake again (maybe 2015) I was gonna bring my RV past your place and ask to borrow trailers and boats and adapters lol lol

Mike;
Are you saying there are truck and or trailer manufactures that do not follow a standard wiring diagram for what plug runs what item.

IE: Ford uses plug 1 for the tail lights while GM uses plug 1 for the left turn.
That seems kind of stupid to me but hey I have seen worse.

I took the original post to mean he wanted a plug and play 7 pin plug for his truck. It just plugs into the factory wiring without cutting and splicing the truck wires.

The problem is this plug works on 1999 to 2001 F250/350
They do not list one for a 1997 F350.

For it you first need to get a 4 wire plug and play.

And then convert it over to a 7 plug.

But I may be reading the original post wrong and you have it right.
Installation of 7 Way Connector on a 1997 Ford F 350

I have a 4 prong flat already but need the 7 to run the brakes. The truck has plugs run a 4 by its self and another for brakes, power for breakaway battery and back up lights. What i need are the connecters to merge them into the 7 prong. Maybe has to become an expensive Ford item if they even stock it any more

If you go to any good RV or trailer sales they should be able to fix you up with what you need. I would just wire in a 7 prong plug and do away with the other two plugs. If you ever do need to use a 4 prong they make an adapter that plugs into 7 prong and adapts to 4 prong.

since you already have the 4 pin connector wired, this may be the way to go. http://www.reese-hitches.com/products/,LM-47185 It has a pigtail that plugs into your flat connector, plus features the 7 pin round connector and the flat connector both to plug a trailer into. You can buy them around $25 at most anyplace that sells trailer lights, wiring, etc. Even down to places such as Autozone and Walmart.

If it"s like our Ford vans, there is two plugs on the back, in the frame. 1 is for lights, there was a factory harness chassis to flat four. There was a different factory harness that plugs into both chassis plugs and goes to a 7 wire RV plug. Sorry but I don"t have part #"s.

So why not cut them off and put the wires into a new 7 way so you have a proper wiring system?
