Fuel Mix

The other day I was doing some clean up where an old building had fallen in and picked up what was left of an old Sears chain saw. On the tank, the mix instructions said,"Mix 3/4 pint 30wt. Non-Detergent motor oil with each gallon of gas." I think that dates it back to the early to mid-sixties.

Yes yes, that is why the synthetic stuff is so wonderfull. I used my McCulloch 610 one time and mixed it to the book to see what the giggle factor would be. Well I said ONE time did I not? Oh brother what a smoke screen! I have flea market find saws that I rebuilt and you find almost totally carbon plugged spark screens, totally blocked compresion relief port valves and mufflers with so much carbon they weigh almost one pound! The mufflers I just threw out but the port valve you can clean and the little 1/8 hole I carefully drilled with a finger drill. Screen you take off and GENTLY cook it with a propaine tourch. Use the Sthill,Echo,Husqvarna, etc. mixes.

Dad bought a new McCulloch Super 55 (7HP gear driven with 27 inch chipper bar) in 1957. He ran ethyl gasoline with Wolfs Head 30 non- detergent oil in it.It smoked only when you first stated it but after it got warmed up it run as clean as the new saws.

That's about the time frame I remember but Sears was heavy on their amount. We used a small coke bottle full per gallon. Can't remember if that was 6 or 7 ounces & it was a Homelite.

Yes, I would expect that. They did have an issue with carbon buildup.

Dang, 3/4 pint to 1 gal? No wonder they smoked profusely. That is almost a 10:1 mix ratio right? 12oz to 128oz.

4play, I was a little surprised myself,and I actually used that saw years ago. All I remembered was 8oz. per gallon. This saw was built when Sears were using Power Products engines, (Tecumseh). I remember cutting firewood at my Mother-in-Laws place, I had a 24 inch bar and chain on it, her husband and his sons used Macs, and kinda snickered when I unloaded this "old thing". Then I fired it up and began cutting, wiped the smile off their face in a hurry!

I tried running the lawnboy mower (OMC) on something closer to today like 32:1 instead of 16:1

it stopped siezed.

loosen it up get back on 16:1 and years more service

Many saw companies were still recommending using 30W motor oil in the late 70s. Even Stihl. 20 to 1, or 16 to 1.
