Went to spray my apple trees this morning. I must have left water in the wand and it split. Soldered it up it wouldnt shut off. sprayed and then the top broke and wont unscew any more. Does anyone have suggestions on a good one Im willing to put money into a good one that will actualy work and last. I have 7 good sized trees.

I had a good 2 gallon one from ACE and it worked great. Couldn't find it this spring so last week I picked up one from Fleet Farm that was on sale for about $14.00. I haven't opened it up yet but I figure it's worth a shot. Besides, the old one will show up as soon as I put chemical in the new one.
The 2 times I sprayed this year I used a one gallon sprayer I just bought for weed killer but hadn't used yet. Not as much fun having to fill 3-4 times to do all of the trees.

I use pump sprayers all of the time to spray my cattle with fly spray.. I buy them either at TSC or at Home Depot any time I need one, and don't even know what brand they are.
I do two things that I believe extend the life of the sprayers.
1. I always hold the tank upside down and release the residual pressure from the tank THROUGH the wand by squeezing the trigger until all of the pressure has been released. I've never had a wand freeze up on me.
2. I pour a little bit of Wesson cooking oil down the stem of the plunger that is pumped to build up pressure within the tank. The Wesson oil doesn't harm the rubber disk on the plunger, and makes the whole operation easier to use.

Have you ever tried a hose end sprayer. That's what I used to use on fruit trees. It'll spray a lot higher than a pump up sprayer.
Every time I get done with my pump up sprayers, I hang them upside down with the pump mechanism removed. I also lock the spray wand on and hang it so it will drain out the tip end. Never had one fail if I hung it like that. I do it every time I use them, because I'll forget to winterize them if I don't. It's the pits to be old and forgetful, but I was once young and forgetful too. I have three pump ups. One for garden bugs, one for brush killer, and one for cattle spray. One is an old Spray Doc brand, other two I can't remember.

I don't know what you are spraying but I have a small orchard (24 trees) and usually don't use anything but Seven.
Been using wand sprayers but tried a hose end sprayer this year and it worked much better and oddly enough used less product.
What kind of trees?

brad, i start in the spring with orchard spray, its an insecticide and fungicide on all my fruit trees. then thru the summer, use sevin to keep the japanses beetles from stripping the trees. also use lindane borer spray to keep them rascals out of the bark. have apple, plum, peach, apricot, cherry and illinois blueberry.

You really have a selection. I use dormant oil on my trees at the end of the season and it really helps too.
The first year that we put the orchard in we let the bugs get a foothold on the young trees and had to battle them all summer with some of them almost completely defoliated. Japanese beetles....I hate them.
Do you fertilize your apple trees? if so at the end of the season or in the springtime? I am thinking I might spread some cow manure around the trees in the fall to see if I can increase the blossoms in the spring.

i use fruit tree spikes to fertilize. my nurseryman that i get my stock from advises against a lot of nitrogen on fruit trees. he says it causes tree groth of branches and leaves, but they dont put much fruit on. i put the spikes down in the early spring. i bought one of those bulb planter drill bits for my cordless drill, run some holes around the tree and drop the spikes in the hole. i use 3 spikes per tree. for jap beetles, i keep liquid sevin on the trees and then also have the jap beetle traps out. i mount them on either 5 gallon pails or 30 gallon plastic drums. lot of guys say no to the traps, say it brings the beetles in. yup it does, but most all get caught in the traps. i'd rather have em in the traps than on my trees. first couple years i was getting 30 to 40 Gallons of beetles a week. now it get maybe 5 gallon a week between 6 traps. say hi to everybody up there!!
