electric motor on drill press

I have a craftsman drill press and when you switch it on it blows the breaker checked and cleaned out the dirt dobber nest in it and it does turn not locked up what do you think is my problem is the motor just bad or can I fix it? Thanks

If it rotates freely by hand, but it"s blowing the breaker, you"ve probably got a short in the windings. If that"s the case you can have it rewound at a motor repair shop if there"s something special about the mount or whatever. If it"s a common frame size motor, and a common (or close to it) speed, your best bet will be to just get a new motor.

Just to say you did it... Disconnect the wire from the motor, turn it on to make sure the switch or wiring itself isn't shorted.

Are you tripping a regular overload breaker or a GFCI? I have had that problem tripping a GFCI this time of year because of high humidity. If I plug it into a regular breaker circuit it will run fine.
