Are you pointing at what looks like a small chunk out of casting? If so I think its a drain hole.If the band is ok the brake should work. Looks like the whole brake assembly needs a good cleaning.

From where I'm sitting it looks like you have so much crap in behind the brake band that it's probably worn thin and inoperative. Clean the whole thing out and see if it's broke through. Seen more than one like that.

I pulled up a photo of chain brakeband and from your photo band looks like it will have to be replaced. Band should go almost all the way around clutch drum and fasten upper left and other end to chain brake handle.

Hi we got one of those Poulan saws here looks like the brake mechanism got hot and maybe melted the plastic while saw was running, I think crap gets in and makes the brake drag till it self destructs!..

This happened to ours this winter. luckily for me L.O.L!!!!!! my Dads a pack rat and kept the last junk pile the motor went out of, so I had parts here. He spent the morning messing with it. Next time I have bother with a poulan i"m gonna run the parts one over so we have to go buy something else because he"s got no spare parts here to fix it. I hate that saw.
Regards Robert

(quoted from post at 12:25:57 05/28/14) the brake band is dead ended ie attached to nothing at bottom.

Because it doesn't attach at the bottom. It encircles the clutch drum. The little divot at the bottom is a drain hole as far as I've ever been able to figure, to let bar oil or water get away fromt he drum. Look at the 2nd pic in this ebay link to see what it's supposed to look like- http://www.ebay.com/itm/Poulan-295-4620-Clutch-Cover-Chain-Brake-New-530054819-/360355624841?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53e6de7789

No offense intended, but you let so much garbage build up in there that it wore through the brake band. You need to clean the saw up every few hours of use. That applies to any make of saw, not just Poulon. The other poster with the melted side cover did the same thing. I've seen the same thing on other makes.

Oh, for gosh sakes, just keep body parts out of the way between cuts and don't worry about it!

I am SO thankful if my CS just STARTS and RUNS!

(DISCLAIMER... DON'T try this at home!)

Hi I get what you are saying about the build up and
why it happened. My biggest problem with the poulan
is it's a $3 chainsaw, with many issues. I just
hate the thing, Dads got more hours than It's worth
in making 1 out of 2 every time it quits. I would
just rather go get something with a better name and
quality , thats worth fixing, and the chain stays
tight for more than 2 minutes.

(quoted from post at 09:45:08 05/29/14) not sure this is exactly but is similiar poulan showing loop that broke and how it attaches

Jim, I'm not sure we're on the same page here. You can get an entire new side cover and chain brake assy off Ebay for $15-25 dollars. Get one and keep it cleaner than the one you have now. The problem isn't the saw, it's maintenance. Clean the saw every now and again, blow out all the dust and oil, clean the air filter and bar grooves/oil holes. That will solve a lot of problems.

Todays Poulans are not what they were 30years ago. But then, todays consumer grade Stihls and Huskys aren't either. You're going to pay well over $500.00 for a pro quality saw. The bigger ones are well over a grand. A mid grade saw is still going to run close to $400.00 new. That's probably why Dad is running the Poulan.

The new poulans are better than the old ones but still not in the same class as a Stihl or Husky. BIL has a new Poulan Pro 50 cc ( nice running saw) but it can't begin to keep up with my MS250 45cc and it's not a pro. I like saws that cut fast and at the end of day I have a pile of wood to show for it. I have got so now all I use are Stihl,Husky and Echo. My larger saws are German or Swedish made. My very first new saw was a Poulan (15 years ago} and It spent more hours in work shop than in woods.

The new Poulans ARE Huskys, or rather the new consumer grade Huskys are Poulans. Poulan hasn't made a really good saw since the early to mid 80's, maybe a few in the late 80s-early 90's.
