Neighbor widow selling tools, older craftsman benchtop metal lathe about 4 feet long, couldn"t get to close, what would be a reasonable offer without taking advantage?? thanks

Take a look on Scambay and see what they are going for. A Crapsman lathe.........It is a hobby lathe only.

Nothing wrong with a Craftsman (Atlas) lathe for average use, and a great starter lathe- probably worth $250-$300, maybe more if it"s in great shape and/or has a lot of stuff with it. I had a 12x36 Craftsman for a long time, worked well enough for what I was doing, and made money on it when sold/ partial trade. Look for 3 and 4- jaw chucks, steady rest, maybe a face plate, taper attachment, tool post and bits etc. If you"re doing heavy or precision work, keep looking

Crapsman? Scambay? Must you resort to name calling? Didn't your mom teach you that if you can't say something nice, it is better to say nothing?
OK, so you don't like Sears tools. Some do, and some don't. That is no reason to condemn everything they sell out of hand.
eBay is a legitimate commercial auction house that found a way to make the entire world their market. I think it is WONDERFUL!!!! They made it possible for me to find items that may have taken me YEARS otherwise. And, FYI, I have done HUNDREDS of transactions on eBay, and have had no problems. Sellers have been honest, delivered what they promised, and done it all at fair prices. This is one train you can't stop no matter the name calling or not.

If you said 200 bucks you would not be taking advantage. If it has alot of tooling [ like other guys posted] thats a big plus.[ look for broken gears and marks all over the ways from abuse] If it hit a used tool shop they would probably ask 800-1000 and it would sit awhile until the right guy came along. If it had no extras at all and it was me I would say 150 but I spend every Saturday looking . If you pass up on one you will see another. A good way to judge price is to go on eBay and check a box that reads "completed listings" -- the ones in green sold the ones in red did not sell.

I have Snap-on tools but I am very thankful to still have Sears to go to in a pinch. How many other retail department stores even offered something such as a lathe in the past. { and I agree with exactly what you posted on eBay] .

I still have my dads little 6" Atlas. I've done a LOT of repair and other work with it. Great starter lathe. $150-$500 depending on whats with it and condition.

Just what the world needs! More correct police. I have been on YT for many years and Craftsman has been called crapsman more than craftsman in all those years. It is not done out of disrespect for Sears products in most cases. No different that calling Walmart Wolly World or Home Depot a variety of different names that I see on here. Calling it crapsman in only out of line to these looking to gripe about something. Constantly looking for something to gripe about has to be a sad life. I feel sorry for you if you fall into that category.

Paid $250 about 15 years ago for my Atlas. Came with 3 chucks and a fair amount of tooling. I think I got it for a decent price.

You can always go back and give her more money .

I bought a mini lathe and got home to find it had been repaired with what ever worked ( o ring replaced the cog belt ) The bushings were sloppy and the gears for the power feed were missing . The box of tooling had one chipped cutter and a bunch of stuff that had nothing to do with the lathe .

The replacement parts to make it a fully working lathe would be double the value of the whole unit .
