Die Grinder Stones for Flail Sharpening

Based on earlier answers here and other places, I have decided to use my pneumatic die grinder to sharpen the flails on our 5" mower in place. I will disconnect the mower and roll it over so the flail drum can be accessed. I haven"t decided exactly how to hold everything in an accessible, solid position, but I"m a pretty good equipment operator so will figure out something.

My question at this point: What is the best kind and source of die grinder stones for this operation? My die grinder has both 1/8" & 1/4" collets, but I"m certain the 1/4" shank stones are best for this relatively heavy duty operation. I don"t know what grit to ask for, nor where to get the best deal on stones that will work well.

The stones that Harbor freight sell are too soft.

I found an angle grinder wonderful for sharpening those sort of knives in place

Here is what I use to sharpen lawn mower blades, garden hoes, almost anything with a good starting edge. Use my 4 1/2 inch angle grinder with a sanding disk. I use 80grit for heavy wear on the cutting edge and 120grit to make nice fine edges. Works very well but as with all power tools watch out that it doesn"t grab you. Use a big vice grip or such to hold the blade. I clamp the mower blades to my back yard table with a "C" clamp. Neighbors can"t get over how sharp I get them. I tell them this is the way they sharpen your brand new knife at the factory. They sit at a big belt sander and just knock them out. Watch "How its made".

I agree with the electric angle grinder and a flap disc.

The die grinder is for smaller, more intricate work.

To hold the blades, I use a vise grip "C" clamp.
I hold that with one hand and the angle grinder in the other.

You can get flap discs for die grinders that would probably work pretty good without gouging into the knives. Try a med. grit like 60/80 to start with. Mott/Alamo used to have a grinder for their flail knives.
