metal bandsaw blade replacement...

All,

I'm shopping for a new metal cutting bandsaw blade.

I took a string and followed the existing blade around the wheels, with the wheels at near maximum adjustment.

I measured the string, and got 117 inches.

Is the 9 foot 6 inch blade capable of stretching that much?

I usually cut angle iron, flat iron, steel pipe, mostly for my own purposes. Mostof it 3/8 inch or less in thickness.

I think the existing blade was a combination 10/14 tooth. I measured the width of the blade and came up with 3/4 inch without measuring the teeth.

Thanks for any recommendations. I am looking for one or two blades, not a lot of them.

You say your at max so crank it down some and see if you can get to 114" or less you defenitly won't stretch a blade.

Call Dennis at Iwen Tool Supply Company 989-777-7101 and tell him what you want. He'll make a recommendation that I'm sure will work great for you. They make blades any size you want, are very reasonable - much better pricing than McMaster Carr or MSC, and ship anywhere in the U.S. You won't be disappointed!

I get my 10'6" (126") bandsaw blades from WW Grainger. They have several types from which to choose in a variety of lengths...don't know if your length is in the mix or not.

The surest way to get the right length is to break a known to fit old blade, lay it out and measure it.

The width depends on what you want to do with the blade. It is measured teeth and back combined. You probably have a 7/8 width blade. That will only cut straight or very large radius curves. If you want to do any couture cutting, drop down on your width. But be careful, the guides that hold the blade straight may have to be adjusted or replaced with guides for a narrower blade. Don't want the teeth touching the guides, only the flat.

The 10/14 pitch is too large for what your cutting. Drop back to about a 24.

Is this a metal saw or for wood? A metal saw is capable of running at slower speeds. around 30 to 800 FPM is good for mild steel. If it's a wood saw, need to find a way to slow it down.

If you can find the make and model of the saw just do an internet search for the saw. You will find the exact dimensions that you need.

I bought a 1950"s craftsman band saw at a yard sale, looked up the model number and found all the info I needed.
