Question for rebuilders (pics)

Hey all.

This is a manifold I removed from a 4.0 efi Ford
v-6.

The unit was blowing steam from the head gasket (I
thought) and I tore it down to change the head
gaskets and I found this problem with the lower
intake manifold.

The pitted area is on a mating surface for the
water jacket and looks like either a casting flaw
or corrosion.

My query is should I just use some RTV on the area
and call it good or should I try to get another
manifold?.

I could probably weld it successfully but it is a
precision fit between the heads and I have no way
of machining it correctly.

BTW this is a '97 explorer used mostly as a parts
chaser.

Thanks in advance,

Brad

Is there a good machine shop anywhere near you. I had an AT blow out a chunk of AL between chambers. Took the case to a machine shop; they welded the area full and planed it flat. Put transmission back together and it worked as it was supposed to.

I had a bad water pump that was much worse shape.I used JB weld never had a problem. Fill in the imperfection and let it set up.Then take 120 grit sand paper make it smooth then apply rtv (Just as old allen suggested)

If you have access to a bead blaster I would blast it and JB weld it and file it flat, should be good to go then.

did one worse than that, used black rtv, put a big bead on it and let it sit a while, put it back together, worked fine.

see what you can get a good used one for. Machine shops can weld and mill it down. No reason to do it twice but then again it might work.

I've run into that problem in a few cases myself over the years. As others have said, when the conditions are favorable to do so, clean it up and fill in the defects with JB Weld or another comparable epoxy. Once it sets use a flat file to level the area back out. I've got engines that were done this way that have been running out there on equipment for years without any problems.
