12/3 Wire age ??

Need to do some wiring in the shop [a tool],a guy had bought a bunch of new ROMEX to do a house, which he never did.
I can get a deal on the wire, it has been in good, clean dry storage, but has been packed back about 12 to 15 years.
Should it be alright? looks just like what would be on shelf at a store. But I know it is 12/15 years old already Thank you

Should be fine, that stuff is designed to last indefinitely. Just look it over as you install it, make sure it's not nicked or rat chewed.

Sounds like a deal. The only wire I would disgard [scrap] is used temporary that got paint all over it and nicks etc. from lifts catching it on a construction site . It is often too beat up to save. On a shelf it's like new.

Look at the markings and the temp rating. Is it NM, or NM-B ? NM-B has a 90 degree C temp rating, rather than the 60 degree C temp rating of the older NM varieties. This can possibly make a difference depending on the installation, bundling, install in a hot area (attic) etc. where derating may be a concern.

Think about it, How many houses have old romex?

As long as the insulation isn't falling off, what is the issue?

The Romex wiring in Dad's shop is going on 25 years old, and is still as good today as it was when it was installed. I've still got some left over from when mine was built nearly 14 years ago and I still use a piece from time to time to add or move something here and there. In other words if you can get it for a good price then jump on it because it's just fine to use.

New color is yellow for #12, I do not know if it would pass inspection if you needed to. It would not be an issue if no permit needed pulled.

Does Romex HAVE to be color coded? I thought that was just to make the inspectors job easier.

When I wired up what I did in my house I did use a bit of older 12 ga. The electrician that was overseeing my work questioned me and said since it was 12 ga it would be fine and told me the main reason for the color coding was to make inspections a glance and go operation.

Just wondering.
