broken bolt

Son broke off a rear end cover bolt on his girl friends Blazer. Took four tries welding a washer and bolt to the little bit of the bolt that was above the surface. First time we ever tried this method. Had to replace a bad axle seal. never pulled an axle with C-clips before. Found a video on utube that showed how to reinstall the spider gears. Kinda slick the way it went together. Bill

Helps to add some candle wax as it cools. Melts between the threads to loosen easier. Really works well on stubborn manifold bolts. Never failed me yet.

Did you weld a washer and nut onto the broken bolt? It says you welded a bolt on. Looks like a nut, nice idea, bet the heat helped with the removal.

A neighbour swears by stainless rods for this sort of work. Centre the arc and the flux shields the edges. He'll go down deep in a hole , build the broken stud up and then add the nut. Reckons make the puddle white hot when you're doing it.

I've done it but not that far down and it works.

Then put a spanner on with plenty of lube and rock back and forth till you feel it crack.

I'll tell him about the bees wax.

If there's room to turn it, I like to a strap iron instead of washer and nut. Often it's easier to hold, and thiner than a nut, not such a deep hole to weld in.

You don't have to remove the spider gears to do this job, just the C clips then pull the axles, the spider gears will stay in place unless you rotate the crown gear.
