Ntelos Wireless

We signed up for Ntelos wireless for internet last August when our wireless internet went out of business. Worked fine until this winter. Gradually got worse. We were promised major improvements in January. The opposite happened.

We have a business plan, unlimited data. Which they are now widely advertising. Sounds great but we now find that during business hours there is rarely any internet connection. I thought they were over-subscribed.

I emailed customer service, as the hardware seems to be working correctly. Turns out customer service is a prefix for Republic of Adygea in Russia. As is their tech support, that the customer service person emailed me to call.

Whatever you do, don't take this bait unless your phone service includes Russia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Area_code_877

I think you're jumping to the conclusion that because there's an 877 area code in Russia, that any 877 number is Russian. When you dial 1-877-nnn-nnnn, that's a US toll-free number. If you were to dial 011-7-877-nnn-nnnn, then that would be an international call to Russia.

There are a few international numbers you can dial 1+, but these are almost all in North America (e.g. Canada) or US territories (e.g. Guam).

Thanks Mark, but I wasn't able to call the number with my phone. Nor did they correct me when I emailed them earlier today. Headed to the local phone store tomorrow, we'll see.

Would be nice to have someone explain why we get no service during the day, for a business account.

Seems they flipped a switch and we're connected again, for now. They mentioned that voice always gets priority over data. Lots of apologies, but all they really said was to let them know immediately if we have any more difficulty.

So yesterday afternoon we had no internet. I called a number that works and found a clerk who couldn't figure out who I was or find my account. The other 3 people had no difficulty. I gave up, internet returned half an hour later.

Ntelos, not recommended. Though I did speak to someone there who found our property very interesting after I explained that Verizon had once started negotiations for leasing tower space here. I've had a lot of neighbors switch from Verizon after they learned that they really could get coverage here- with a different carrier.

My wife was unable to talk to anyone in their phone store, jam-packed with customers responding to "unlimited data" ads. Great, if they had the network to support it.
