John Deere 60

Bought this 60 the man said they hit stump while brush
hogging broke pto shaft inside replaced it but can stop shaft by
hand any thoughts said broke gear but I inspected pinion gear
on end of shaft looks fine no teeth missing

You are going to be pulling it apart to find out what is wrong.
Sounds to me like a shaft, key, ETC. is sheared.
Post back with what you find.

Well I have seen a few and heard about more others that had the cast in boss that holds the bevel gear in the bottom of the main case ripped right out. If this happened you are SOL if anything else broke you can fix it.
 
Tried to verify this on the JD parts on line, but having trouble getting download of PC 244 Model " 60 " Tractor . If you can down load it may show a set of dry clutches between the rear PTO out put shaft and the drive gear in the trans case. At least their was on dad's 620 and I believe the 60 with live PTO may be the same or may be not, the manual will show it either way.
 
years ago i had same problem pto engage a small twist lever was turned wrong may not be your problem but always start simple
 
the cluch packs locked up or the fork is out of adjustment, some would lose the rear seal early 53 only and fill up with 90w and not stop to
