John Deere Chainsaw

I ran across a couple of used John Deere chainsaws today. I do not know much about them. I was hoping that someone here would have information about them. Like who makes them, are they any good, how do they compare to other chainsaw brands, etc.

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob

Some were made by Kioritz(sp) that also makes Echo.
Not sure about the one you have but someone else
will know more and I think there's some more info
in the archives on here. Look under John Deere
chainsaws.

think Poulan made some early ones. Believe they tried a chainsaw line at least twice.

The John Deere CS52 and CS56 chainsaws were built in Italy by Olypic/EFCO. Neighbor sold fire wood and used two John Deere CS56 chainsaws. He liked them but said they were had to get parts for. John Deere dealer did not stock very many parts.

I have cs62 saw has been a very good saw they were made by efco for deere. I have efco dealer near me who says they are efco saw just green and yellow.

Yup, look like Efcos/Olympic/Olympyk/Oleo-mac. Decent Italian saws. The 3816 is likely a 38cc engine and the 52 a 52cc engine. Parts? Complete crap shoot. We sold Olympic back in the 80's and it was always touch and go getting parts. Ebay may be your best bet.

I'm sure the early JD saws were made by Echo, which were a descent home owner grade saw, not a production saw. If your needing a saw for more than just occasional use I would spend the extra money and purchase a Stihl or Husky.

I had a CS230, looks very similar to yours. When I had to get a new starter assembly, it came in red, instead of JD yellow - same color as Remington saws.
It was a good saw, definately got my money's worth out of it.

It's an EFCO. The CS56 is one of the best saws in
that size class ever made. Built better then any
Stihl of that size. The CS52 is a bit cheaper
built and not a pro-saw. Still a good saw for an
"el cheapo." EFCO is one of the leading pro-saw
companies in Europe - especially Italy. The Deere-
EFCOs were better then the previous Echos, and
world's better then the previous Deere-Remingtons.
I's hardly worth mentioning the Deere-Homelite
alliance.

have a CS56 , like it a lot, real workhorse, not sure about that model, mine was made in Italy by Efco

Thank you for all the help and information. I have always had Stihl chainsaws, and one Poulan. I never liked the Poulan, but have always been happy with the Stihl"s. I hope the John Deere"s will be decent saws. Thanks again, Bob
