Are you guys still having trouble finding 22 ammo? There is still a lot of it out there on various sites but the profiteers are still gouging big time. Cheapest I have seen on sites like G*n Broker is about $55.00 a brick of 500. There is no reason for that and if people would quit paying those prices, the gouging would stop. I stopped at a gun shop a few days ago to inquire about a mechanic shop in the area(my PU sheared the belt idler pulley)and as I was walking in, an older gentleman was walking out with a brick of 22. After talking to the clerk I asked how much his ammo was. SHOCK!!. $23.00 a brick. And, no I didn't buy the 4 bricks he had, I only bought one. My grandson's had been out for awhile and I split it with both of them. Let us help each other and not pay the gougers prices.

I agree, its pathetic, in '97 it was $9.86 for 550 Federal at walmart. A few years back it was less than $20, say '09 or around there. Gouging, if you do that, I have a low opinion of you, bullying people for profit. Lot of them out there doing it, and nope, non for sale on the shelf since Dec '13 around here, and we cannot order off the web anymore, this is entirely frustrating, I just hope we can vote our governor out, keep up the petitions, protest and do what we can, to have our voices heard, it sucks because, if you have land, you have varmints and if you got caught without enough .22 when all this occurred you are S.O.L. ! I was able to bolster some of my stock by trading with a friend who bought consistently over the years. I never thought it would get like this, am not a gun fanatic, but certainly enjoy the privilege, and one day you wake up and all this crap unfolds to what we have today, restricted access, and nothing on the shelf, because its hoarded, some say the government side tracked the public by buying huge quantities, I don't know the facts, but everyone around here is snatching anything they can get when it comes to ammo, but there is some stock on the shelf at walmart, it was literally empty for almost a year. I see common rifle calibers available, .308, 30-06, 7.39x7.62, and .223 and or 5.56 etc. no rimfire at all, .22, .22 wmr etc.

Its crazy, maybe a warning, I don't know, I just can't get over the situation like it is here currently. How many of us since we were kids, and some older, younger, that make up those who participate here, will remember planning an outing to go plinking, small game hunting or whatever, then going to the gun shop, Kmart or whatever it was that you had, and you could always afford to buy what you needed, because it was on the shelf, always, was cheap for what it was, but necessary to have at times, or just for fun, who would have thought that .22 LR which was as common as a penny in your spare change, would be literally gone everywhere you look like it is today. I felt guilty about taking shot on a raccoon that I chased of my porch a few weeks back, one shot but one I can't replace, it was at midnight and it was a miss, being a tad too dark.

What I really hate is the guys who bought out the entire stock at the local Kmart/walmart/whatever when it was $9 a brick for .22 and $3/box for shot, and now they want to sell it at $50/brick, and $10/box.

Sign on counter of gun shop at local WalMart says that if they recieve any .22 ammunition, it will be available at 8:00 a.m. Usually 3 to 8 guys standing in line at 7:00 in hopes of buying some .22 ammo.

I'm not trying to be snarky and I hope I can phrase this without being political, but the truth is "we" created this situation both within NY and nation wide. We have nobody to blame for this but "ourselves".

Before anyone takes exception to this I am using "we" and "ourselves" to keep this general and not specific. Hope you all understand what I am saying.

I went to a Gun Show,(small town) a couple of weeks ago, I saw 22 ammo anywhere from $55 to $85 a brick. I won't buy from those kind of people. I'll ration my shots instead. I always had a soft spot in my heart for the single shot rifles, they make you shoot straighter.

Gander Mountain advertised it last Friday for $24.99 a brick of 525, two different brands. Store opens at 9. I thought it opened at 8 and got there at 10 minutes to 8. Several vehicles there already. About 5 minutes after 8, people started lining up in a light rain waiting for the store to open. I left as I had to go to work. Stopped back that afternoon, guy said it they had the counter piled high, not sure how much, and it was all gone in 25 minutes. They limit how much you can purchase, and I did notice that several of the people waiting were couples, meaning each of them could buy whatever the limit was. I have been stopping by there fairly often, their supply whatever it is comes in on Thursday nights. They usually don't have bricks anyway.

Local dealer has been auctioning his 22's. He started at $50 a brick but had to drop down some lately.

When I was a boy I bought my 22's from our local Western Auto store. It didn't take long to pick up enough drink bottles and return them for deposit to buy a box. 49 cents a box with a penny sales tax made it an even fifty cents.

I won't pay what they want now a day's just on principle.

I think I was at least 15 before I could afford a whole "BOX" of .22 ammo. Gene, the owner of the hardware store would sell us bullets for a penny a piece. 25 would be enough for a rabbit and a squirrel hunt.
I knew a couple kids that bought bricks but they couldn't hit a squirrel if it was in a bird feeder

I understand what you mean. But it is still crazy. When I started working for my brother at the store in 2008. We had a display case full of any ammo you wanted. Now it is all in one corner and no 22 or much of anything else. Most is already sold so when it does come in. It goes right back out. From the truck to the customer. Doesn't even make it to the store shelf.

Around here you can find .22 in small boxs but hit and miss on bricks. The cheapest small boxs run around $2.25 a box and bricks $55.00 on up.

The only 22 ammo I have is 2 50 rnd boxes of LR, a plastic CCI box of 22 short and 6 boxes of Aguila Colibri(no powder, shoots with primer only)that is left of a brick I bought in Reno, NV about 5 yrs ago.

As long as there are buyers willing to pay fifty bucks for a product you can buy retail for twenty-five, the situation will not change. Retailers should simply raise their prices to a level where they can keep the product in stock; the secondary market would disappear and eventually prices will come down.

Richard,
Yes, I had a problem finding .22 shells until a friend's brother passed away and left him several bricks. He shared a couple of them with me. I'm set for .22 shells for awhile, but I'm having the same problem finding 30-30 shells. Friend's brother didn't own a 30-30.

In the past couple years since this non-sense started I think I've shot maybe 30 rounds of 22. I have a couple thousand rounds on hand, not because I was hording, but because I happened to buy some on sale. I won't be shooting 22RF until things return to a sane level.

OTOH, I cast my own bullets, have thousands and thousands of primers and lots of powder and brass on hand. I don't do a lot of shooting anymore but I tend to gravitate towards cast in anything over 6.5 caliber. Works fine for me. But it's not for everyone.

Makes sense, whatever has evolved, society has a hand in it. The way I see it, that kid was bullied, he snapped, planned for retaliation, followed up on that, his father knew he was evil, or there was a serious problem, mother could not have been very diligent with the firearms ownership, whatever the details were there on that, we don't really know, but that kid could have sourced weapons, firearms elsewhere too, that was the straw that broke the camels back, add that to previous incidents, boils down to those who know better, and those who do not, don't respect life anymore, don't respect firearms, other peoples rights, because what they do, kill innocent people, we all pay for in one way or another. Its a complexity of the human race, the difference between those who will use firearms for crime, and those who will not, we're all, nor can we be by virtue of what we are, be on the same page. Thats the problem, who will do these things, who will not, and how do you get those who will to become those who will not when you can't even tell who will until its already done. I've never been a chronic complainer, just not wired like that, but I think its fine to be a little put off by the current situation, being a law abiding citizen with no conception on how the other half(mass murderers)lives.

Not sure what or why you are asking, but I think you left one word out of your question, "at" my place maybe LOL ! I should not divulge that info, LOL, might attract undesirables, but I believe 1500 or a little more, as I've stashed some and when cleaning I have found some in a drawer or hiding spot LOL ! Should have enough til this blows over, if it ever does, as the only time I will use it is to dispatch a varmint or nuisance animal around the place. I am low on .22WMR, with only 150 rds, can't find that anywhere off the shelf either. Same with deer hunting, I no longer sight in(check) or practice, for the last 2-3 years I've fired one shot each season anyway = 1 kill, last one was a heart shot at just over 100yds during last season, so I suppose my dry practice of holding a sight picture, reticle on target, breathing and that the rifle holds its zero etc. will have to suffice, just sucks to feel guilty about practicing because you can't replace your supply. I like to practice 250-300 yds shots, as thats part of the range I shoot during the season. I use specific ammo that I could get right off the shelf, right down the street, no longer in stock, did order what I could, then they outlawed that, NY is a lousy state for a firearm owner now, and it was never before, I remember when NJ went strict, was so glad I reside in NY or had a primary residence here when working out of town, not so proud anymore.

The only way I believe I can source the specific factory ammunition that I use is to find it available on the web, and then see if a registered dealer will order it for me, its pathetic having to do this, so I will have to go back to reloading, I only have the die for my caliber in a semi, used to bring that to a friend with the press and all the rest, we would spend an afternoon loading, have no choice now, but at least I do have a proven load that I can make again, one that worked very well on whitetail deer in the past, and gave tight groups.

22LRH , this is what I want. It is not available any -where at any price. No 22's can be found anywhere at all.

If you had a grainery full of corn and the price was $15 a bushel. There would be nary a peep of complaint as you sold it for $15 and no discounting for "moral reasons".

Nobody here votes wrong.

Besides it doesn't seem to matter which way you vote, the side that claims to be the "correct" side had SIX years with carte blanche at the Federal level to get things straightened out and they did NOTHING.

I have heard that the last lead smelter in the U.S. has recently shut down I would think that this may be a part of the probelem. If the Govt. cant out law firearms they will find a way to limit the availabity of ammunition.

The last one in Missouri closed because it did not want to update to meet specifications. There are large facilities in Arizona and Alaska. Only 3% of the lead produced is used for ammunition.

It is another conspiracy theory that this was targeted on ammunition.

i've found .22LR at Walmart only once in the past year or so, and then I could only buy two 50-round boxes. I noticed the other day the price at Walmart is now up to $4.20 for the cheapest box of 50. (Of course, the shelf was empty.) I just got back from the Tulsa gunshow, where $55 or more a brick was pretty standard and $70 wasn't unusual. I did get a brick from Cabela's a few weeks ago for $29, and I have a confirmed order in at gander Mountain for $26 a brick shipped to my local store. I'm not trying to hoard, but I AM trying to get some ammo on hand for summer plinking before my grandson's get too old to want to hang around me.
