Code or not it is wise to put all wiring in conduit at least up to 8 ft high.

check your local code and see what it says,it mite have to be and it might not, have had several pole barns and been electrical inspected and none were in conduit.

Check your local code. In my area years ago Romex was allowed in situations like you describe. Eventually the code was changed to require conduit. Existing installations are generally grandfathered.

MC (Metal Clad) mentioned below will help prevent rodent damage, but is not acceptable to the code as being able to resist mechanical damage. It too must be protected by conduit, in walls, etc.

EMT is fairly easy to bend and not very expensive. Run conduit and bend it, pull individual THHN wires and you have a neat, well protected job that will last a lifetime.

It depends on what your local inspector will accept, but I used conduit in mine. It was quite a bit of extra expense and work over Romex, but I think it was well worth it. I ran conduit along the girders and posts to make it easier to insulate later. Don't forget to protect your 120V outlets with a GFIC.

Its NOT what your buddy says or anyone here, ITS ONLYYYYYYYYYY LOCAL AUTHORITY AND INSPECTORS that can answer your question. That being said, EMT conduit with enclosed individual THHN or THWN conductors isn't all that hard or expensive to install..........

If you live in a very rural area, the only inspector you would need to satisfy would be your insurance agent. If he is happy, everyone's happy.

Not really in the NEC does it say that.....some jurisdictions make you do that....and it IS a good idea to do it, or at least use MC cable. I do not like romex in a barn......not one bit
