OT, Cleaning oild oil and grease cans for display

I have a number of old oil and grease cans I want to get cleaned up for display, but do not want to ruin the org. finish on them. Any ideas on what to use or how best to clean them up? Thank you

I have cleaned up things with wax and grease remover used for automotive paint prep. The one that comes to mind is PPG DX330. I have used it to clean the gears and other mechanical parts of old military radios (more complicated than an automatic transmission). They had index marks painted on them, and the chassis also had alignment marks. None were damaged with this cleaner. Might work for your needs.

WD40 to get oil and grease off then Dawn dish soap and warm water. Nothing abrasive. I try to keep it simple and cheap.

R-390 or 391 by any chance?

Spent many an hour tweaking those boogers. When they worked, they were amazing. When they didn't, they were a nightmare.

If you mean the metal cans you can use. 4/0 steel wool lightly, and mineral spirits. If you mean the cardbord brand name cans such as Quaker State ,Texaco etc. almost any sovent will sart to take off the graphics so I just use a rag only. I collect both types.

As a long time petroliana collector I can tell you it depends.
The metal cans don't have paint on them. They have ink on them.

I've used everything from stoddard solvent, kerosene, WD40, various household cleaners ranging from dish washing soap to Simple Green.
Shampoo and warm water usually gets them pretty clean, then use Maguire's cleaner polish. I ruined a very nice Cities Service quart using only cold water. Took the green right off leaving the white base coat.

If they're really greasy try Simple Green on the back.
I would recommend you don't use steel wool of any grade.

I am not suugesting steel wool on the labeled cans only the Eagle type squirt cans . I have also ruined the graphics by just wiping the oilyness off the can and the ink goes with it. If my house ever burns down they will accuse me of arson because alot of my old display cans are full. Petroliana show 4/27/14 at American Legion Elmwood Park NJ. { if you have a really rare can don't even wipe it as you are chancing ruining it]
