Magnetic interference

I posted a couple of days ago about trying to weld with a magnet holding two pieces together. Well, I got a few responses, some saying they had the same trouble I did and one person said he never had a problem. So, I tried again today with a magnet that I didn't mind ruining placed under the piece I was trying to weld. Same thing. The arch would jump all over the place, splatter and spit, and would not let me strike an arch. I removed the magnet and ran a bead normal as could be. Strange to me.

Interesting.

There is a misconception that AC is not affected by magnetic fields, but that's simply not true. What happens when you run alternating current through a magnetic field is the resultant force switches direction 120 times per second, which in the case of welding reduces arc blow. But the force is still there, as you've seen.
