Vise Grips again .

Since I never noticed who made Vise-grips [I assumed it was Irwin] I looked at my vise grip drawer . 22 Petersen 1 Craftsman 4 Irwin 2 Leverage Tools 2 Handi-Vise and 1 Klein . Two had modifications I made one to crush rivets and one as a panel flanger. Other than a few times on something like a stripped trans cooler line or such I don't think I have ever used them for anything other than a welding clamp. { one of the Peteresens is a shape to remove stuck oil filters. But other than welding clamps or clamping off a line what do you use your Vise -Grips for ?

Grabbing on to rusted exhaust manifold studs just yesterday to replace the studs. Heat studs till cherry red, melt candle wax on, grab on with the lockers and wiggle ever so lightly til they start working loose.

Also work great to grab the end of a spring to attach.

Holding s carriage bolt or bolt with rounded head from spinning when removing nut. That's just the beginning. A 7" Petersen is one of my favorite tools for general maintenance/repair work.

I use Vice grips every day. They make good handles for moving steel, removing broken bolts, crushing wire connectors, emergency road repairs (enough said about that!). Know of one local farmer back in the early "60"s that custom applied nitrogen with an old Farmall M that had a Vicegrip for a steering wheel. Any thing that a wrench or other tool can"t handle it is time to grab the Vice grips! Armand

"The oversized pair of pliers with a bolt in its right leg."
Seems like there was a commercial ditty about all the uses of a vise grips but that was all that came to mind. Guess I better mosey on over to youtube...

Our IH 300's drawbar lift handle kept loosening up, and Gramp finally got sick of fixing it. Gramp didn't get mad often, but after a few go-rounds of this, he grabbed a pair of vise-grips, set them around the shaft, and SQUEEZED, and when Gramp squeezed something, it stayed squeezed. That was 30+ years ago, and Gramp's gone now, but the tractor's still on the farm and those vise-grips are still there!
My vise-grips get used a lot--one of my favorite uses is for holding small parts while grinding--lots of mine have nicks and scrapes in the jaws from that and even good ones are a lot cheaper to replace than fingers.

My grip is kind of failing. If I have a screw I can't get out I clamp a vise grip on the handle of the driver and then lean against it to keep it from jumping out of the screw head. They also make a mighty fine clamp for a fuel line.

That reminds me I bought a used 60 ford pickup yrs. ago and it had a pair of vise grips on one of the rear brake lines pinching it off. I drove it home that way and didn't know it untill sometime later.

I forgot - I had a pair that rode around on a tractor for years. The mixture screw was loose enough to turn itself so it would get too rich and die. I clamped those on there because I didn't have the right size with me to tighten the packing nut. Every time I thought about it I was too busy or already on the tractor. Finally tightened it one winter and got my grips back.

I like to listen to the radio in the shop, and reception isn't very good, so I put an antenna on top of 20 ft. of gas line, leaned it up against the gable end of the barn, and put a pair of those cheap harbor freight locking pliers on the pipe to fine tune the radio. Been there about 12-13 years.

Gotta a small pair on throttle sector of 2N to stop over revving since MORE work needed to fix it, been there 2 yrs so far; had same small pair holding gounding strap to ground of windshield wiper motor on ole chebby I had for 7 yrs

Can't quite reach the PTO engage rod on the SMTA.. VG makes a good 10 inch extension. Plus it's there when OI need one in the field.
